established care provider with over 600 franchisees in four countries. He wanted to have a positive impact on the lives of the elderly in the communities that he knows and loves. Visiting Angels was established more than 20 years ago and has a proven and successful model. The business has a great sharing culture and many of the existing franchisees have shared best practice from their businesses, which has benefited the group as a whole. What Dan could see was that the support of an established US business would help him to address a very specific problem in the UK market.
"Visiting Angels is proudly carer- centric… The business puts the caregiver first"
Dan says: “The biggest problem in social
care is the recruitment and retention of quality care staff. The sector has been underresourced for a number of years and the lack of funding has led to most carers being paid minimum wage. It is also common to see care staff asked to do too much work in too little time or to see them being expected to spend time unpaid doing elements of their role.” Dan feels that, if things are going to change, a different approach is needed. “Our business model is very different to other care providers. Visiting Angels is proudly carer-centric, which means that the business puts the caregiver first. We pay considerably more than minimum wage, we reward loyalty, we incentivise our caregivers, but most importantly we listen to what is important to them and we try to help them.”

benefits to Dan’s business, with recruitment of staff being easier and a lower turnover of staff. “We have found that our way of working has brought people into caring roles who would not work for other providers. We also get amazing feedback from those with experience. Our reality has been that, by putting the carers first, we are bucking the trend in respect of carer recruitment and retention.” Visiting Angels’ caregivers endorse its
carer-centric approach. Caregiver Anne says: “I have worked at Visiting Angels for several months and I can honestly say it is the best company I have worked for in the care sector. The clients and staff are looked after, and if I have a problem I can talk to the manager or the owner and they help. I have even had my car valeted as a thank you from the owner. I have never been treated this way before and it is a lovely place to work.”
