Franchise Focus

From corporate fi nance to Home Instead Senior Care, franchisee Alan Barr chose an opportunity he was passionate about

A careful decision INVESTMENT LEVEL: FROM £90,000 A

fter two decades working in corporate fi nance, father-of- three Alan Barr walked away from a six-fi gure salary to become his own boss as a

franchisee with Home Instead Senior Care in South Lanarkshire. Having a proven, tried-and-tested

business model to work with alongside a robust support structure to nurture business development and growth held strong appeal for Alan. What further attracted him was the fact that he could set up his territory offi ce just fi ve minutes away from the family home so he could be close to his children.

Alan says: “I could see the market opportunity of buying a franchise with a brand that’s shaking up the care sector market with its quality model and the fact that we have an ageing population – age is all around us.” Alan, aged 50, opened his Home Instead Senior Care franchise in October 2016. “I wanted a business that was sustainable, that would grow and have longevity to see me through to the age of 65 or 70,” Alan comments. “But I also wanted something I was passionate about to be my second career in life and that was the elderly care sector.”

A key fact to highlight is that, like Alan, people don’t have to have a care background to buy a Home Instead franchise. It’s a management franchise opportunity, which means the owner runs the business and recruits the care professionals and caregivers to deliver a quality service.

The Home Instead Senior Care franchise has proven longevity, as it has been operating in the UK for the last 12 years. Many of its franchises are turning over in excess of £1million per year, with operating profi ts of 15 to 20 per cent.
