16 and was diagnosed as dyslexic. He subsequently turned his focus and energy towards his true passion – martial arts, which he had studied from the age of six.
When the couple met, they discovered a mutual enthusiasm for fitness and business and together set off on a journey to create results-focused fitness clubs that would be, in their words, “a place to be, a space where everyone unites to train as a squad”. A true ‘rags-to-riches’ tale within the fitness industry, the Solan Fitness duo founded their dream with just £400 back in 2008. At the time they had no financial funding or support, no formal education and no industry experience. However, what they did – and still do – have was passion, resilience and a relentless work ethic. These qualities led to the opening and success of their first club, based in Orpington in Kent. It wasn’t long before they were in a position to fund a second.
Award-winning gyms
The key to their success is faithfully serving their client base – giving gym-going customers exactly what they want. As Rachelle says: “We build gyms around the members’ needs, focusing on achieving results, and we believe only in delivering
the best equipment with the best service. Being priced within the middle market and adding the value to the members’ experience, our first club grew from strength to strength, which allowed us to open our second club. We saw the opportunity to provide strength-training gyms aimed at the mainstream.” Having established themselves in the South East, the couple are now turning their laser-focus attention on helping others
achieve success within the fitness industry. Rachelle and Josh’s major business accomplishment has been to develop Solan Fitness from a complete startup, organically grown, into a systematic and a turnkey business producing healthy, profitable results. They have received multiple awards for creating one of the UK’s best gyms, so little wonder the time right now is perfect to scale the company nationally and internationally.
