Franchise Focus Discover the potential

Anytime Fitness hosts exclusive discovery days to showcase the health and fi tness industry to potential franchisees

INVESTMENT LEVEL: FROM £170,000 A

nytime Fitness is continuing to thrive in the UK market as it accelerates towards its 150th club opening. The network boasts a broad

range of franchisees, including those with franchises in other sectors and, most notably, those with no prior experience of the health and fi tness industry. Anytime Fitness’s discovery days

off er potential franchisees an informal opportunity to take an in-depth look at the fi tness industry, as well as introducing them to the senior Anytime Fitness UK team, suppliers and current franchisees who are reaping the benefi ts of the model. The days are also designed to reassure potential franchisees that prior fi tness industry knowledge and experience is by no means vital and that support and coaching is available every step of the way. CEO Stuart Broster says: “These events

are a great opportunity for entrepreneurs interested in opening an Anytime Fitness to not only meet us, but people that were previously in their shoes. The fi tness franchise model is a much more reliable and lower-risk investment option than other franchises, as the industry displays sustainable growth and has proven to be robust even in a time of recession. “Accessibility is a big priority of ours and we’ve recently made key senior appointments: Ben Dixon as commercial and property director and Neil Randall as sales and marketing director, who both have over 10 years of fi tness industry experience. This has been a strategic move to help provide additional senior support to franchisees right from the beginning of their journey with us.” Right from a potential franchisee’s

fi rst enquiry, Anytime Fitness off ers around-the-clock support to ensure that franchisees are progressing through every step of the process. Each franchisee is assigned a franchise performance coach (FPC), who will guide them through every stage of owning a club. They have years of experience in the fi eld, ranging from general managers to regional managers across both public and private organisations within the fi tness industry. With a minimum initial investment of £170,000, the longer-term agreement

gives franchisees a longer timescale to recoup their investment and achieve business success. The company projects that franchisees will typically enjoy a return on investment within 18 months, and that clubs are cash positive between six and eight months after opening. A strong return on investment is something that Anytime Fitness prides itself upon and over 60 per cent of its franchisees have gone on to open additional clubs.

Once a club has opened, the FPCs continue to work closely with franchisees, making regular club visits and ensuring realistic key performance indicators are met. Anytime Fitness works with its balanced Evolve scorecard to ensure clubs are performing and identifying internal opportunities to help them improve their fi nancial performance. Stuart adds: “Evolve has been

introduced to help further support our franchisees on their journey with us. By giving them a balanced scorecard of their overall business, we give them a chance to see what they’re doing well and the opportunities available to them. We’re also publishing quarterly league tables so they’re able to benchmark performance

against other clubs in their region and across the wider network. This is by no means a way of ‘naming and shaming’ clubs; it’s a great opportunity to see the potential of what they can achieve. “One of the key attractions to this role for me was the opportunity to give people the platform to run a successful business and it’s very satisfying to see both new and existing franchisees continue to be successful with us.” According to the 2017 State of the UK Fitness Industry Report, health and fi tness is the sector to invest in and the industry has gone from strength to strength in recent years. Market value has increased to £4.7billion and membership has exceeded 9.7 million. Penetration is also at an all-time high of 14.9 per cent, meaning that one in every seven people in the UK is now a gym member.
