Lining from unused leftover fabric

of their collections. The ‘newest’ materials in their

collection are leftovers from designers in Germany. They are

combined with coffee bag burlap to create the

‘Special Editions’ hats. All the brand’s hats are designed

in Berlin and manufactured in a small family-owned factory in Poland. “Since we don’t believe in fast fashion, we do not follow fashion trends but try to create timeless pieces that can be worn for a lifetime. Therefore, although we are upcyclers, we do not compromise on the quality of our hats and caps. Hat making is a traditional profession for which we have the greatest respect. That’s why we have been working with a third-generation manufacturer in Poland for many years now. There, our hats and caps are made on traditional machines with great attention to detail and in the highest quality.” Although upcycling is definitely one of

ReHats’ unique selling points, Iulia says the most important part for fans of the brand is the uniqueness of each piece

is where she stumbled upon burlesque during her final year of high school. She started performing burlesque when she was about 19 years old and danced her way through university and around the world. At Edinburgh College of Art she graduated with a degree in Costume Design, where she studied historical clothing in great detail for four years. “I learned how to identify period features, designs, fabrics and how to reconstruct and repair such clothing. Ten years after graduation, I moved down south from Edinburgh, started a second business and opened a vintage shop in Cheltenham.” Besides vintage clothing, in her shop

“When I was young, I particularly enjoyed the aesthetic of the 1950s and ’60s due to watching TV shows like Heartbeat and films like Grease,” says Missy. “That time period is still my favourite to this day. A key element for mid-century styling is hats, so that’s where it started!” Missy’s love of vintage drew her towards vintage music, films, performance styles and subcultures, which

Missy sells only original vintage hats which, mainly originate from the 1940s and ’50s. They are made by various designers and fashion houses of the past. Her performance headpieces are almost solemnly original vintage designs as well. “The headdresses that I wear during shows are very much an integral piece of burlesque stage costuming. They complete the look, balance our dramatic oversized costumes and give you one more item to remove during your routine. I would say that hats and headdresses definitely inform the movements of a dance as they must move well with

you and your rhythm. Sometimes I come across vintage millinery material and trimmings which I use to mend vintage hats, but sometimes I sell them to other vintage dealers or fashion/costume designers who buy them for their projects. l love the idea of milliners ‘re-working’ less fashionable/desirable hats into new works or salvaging beautiful details from ‘wounded’ vintage pieces to add to new creations. That said, if it is an iconic and desirable vintage design in good wearable condition, I would rather they were cared for and kept as original pieces.” As would be expected, Missy is

delighted that ‘sustainable’ and ‘reduce, reuse, recycle’ are all buzz- words right now. “It’s so important for the future of this planet that we stop our horrific overconsumption and waste production. Vintage clothing is the perfect way to do your bit and cut down the demand for ‘new throwaway’ fashion and also support smaller independent eco-sensitive businesses. When you discover vintage/second-hand, you quickly realise that you get a lot more for your money when it comes to quality fabrics, designer pieces and timeless one-off wardrobe staples!”

they create. “Our customers like to buy and own something special. They often reach out to tell us how much positive feedback they get for their original ReHat. I think that a lot of them might not realise how much they support the environment by buying our hats, as we plant three trees for every hat that we sell to a customer.”
