China. There have been some quality issues in the past, but it’s getting better. We also import hats from many different countries and it’s the same story for us too. Every coin has two sides, and you get what you pay for in China as well as elsewhere. The Chinese home market is booming and is set to become one of the biggest luxury markets in the world. It can’t be ignored. Young Chinese people have a real interest in good quality Chinese-made local design.” Chinese design is one of the focal points for Jeff Sun’s other venture, his incredible hat museum, which is also based in Nantong. China’s only private hat museum, it started life back in 2006 when a friend suggested to Jeff that he start collecting vintage and antique hats from the many places he was travelling to. The idea ignited a real and lasting passion and over the course of the next 15 years Jeff collected so many hats that a museum seemed the obvious next step. From the ancient high-wing bronze crown of the Liao Dynasty (AD 907-1125), to the silver kingfisher-feather-plastered crown of the Qing Dynasty (AD 1644- 1912), to classic masterpieces of modern

and contemporary design from all over the world, the museum is now home to a dazzling collection of hats, headpieces and other accessories. Jeff now wants to go further and celebrate both China and the creative spirit by commissioning 101 hats by leading designers reflecting different Chinese dynasties. He also hopes to publish 101 sayings about hats from the world’s fashion elites and write books about various aspects of hat making. Most of all, however, Jeff hopes to keep

himself and his staff alive to new ideas and possibilities. “I travel a lot every year, I love attending fashion shows, and visiting museums. I enjoy shopping in new stores and rooting around in flea markets. In fact, I can spend whole days there and find endlessly interesting things. I also encourage my designers to travel with me because it engenders a higher vision and a wider range of knowledge which is helpful when it comes to keeping our designs fresh.
