time buyers with local connections in a joint venture between Ribble Valley Borough Council and St Vincent’s Housing Association. The scheme, featuring one, two and

three-bedroomed properties, is the result of a Housing Needs Survey that identified an acute shortage of affordable housing in Waddington. St Vincent’s Housing Association

received £500,000 from the Housing Corporation to help fund the scheme. Rebecca said: “Shared ownership is

a fantastic opportunity for first-time buyers to get on the housing ladder.

“Participants buy a share of the

property, then pay a subsidised rent on the remaining share. In most cases, they can purchase further equity and eventually own the property outright. “I hope the Waddington scheme

will be the first of many shared own ership housing schemes in Ribble Val ley. I will be undertaking similar Housing Needs Surveys throughout the area and searching the borough for suitable development sites.” Rebecca, who is an environment

engineer and joined Ribble Valley Borough Council from the charity

sector, will be working with local com munities to establish their housing needs and ensure any new develop ments meet local needs, while being sympathetic to the environment. The main bulk of the her work will

be through questionnaires and drop- in sessions, giving local people the opportunity to have their say on affordable housing and find out more about shared ownership. Rebecca’s post is a joint appoint

ment by Ribble Valley and Pendle Borough Councils.
