choice of many a bride and groom as they head off to take their vows. The convenience and guaranteed protection from the elements (unless you have the roof downl) means a car is often the first choice. Whether you choose a sporty little number, classic vehicle or stretch limo, make sure you ensure the follow ing: • Make sure the company
knows exactly where you need to be picked up from and taken to on the day, as well as having an alternative route to allow for unexpected traffic on the day. 9 Ask around for a good com
pany, as word-of-mouth can turn up some excellent advice on who to use and who to avoid. 9 Make sure you get a com
plete quote before the day, and th a t you ask about any extras that are included, such as cham pagne during your drive. 2. Horse and carriage This is an ideal way to arrive
in style if you are expecting clear or sunny weather. However, if you are getting
married many miles away, it may not be a good idea, as it could take a while to get there! I t sounds vain, but you also
need to take your hair and make up into consideration. A delicate up do’ may not survive the jour ney, although a tousled curly hairdo may benefit from a bit of fresh air! If possible, try and hire a car-
riage with a hood. This way, you can cover up should the heavens open! Ask the company for an esti
mate of how long the journey will take, and you can then work your preparation around that. Make sure you leave plenty of time for the journey, relax and enjoy the view. k Professional vehicle If you want something a little
different, it is not unknown for brides and grooms to turn up in their works vehicle. This may sound odd, but a fire
engine, ambulance, tractor, post van or even a police car decorat ed by your colleagues could be a real show stopper - just make sure it won’t be missed or needed on the day. I t also adds a special touch
and shows a good sense of humour! 4. Hot air balloon This makes a stunning
entrance or exit, depending on the weather. If you are marrying in the grounds of a hotel or coun try house, you may get permis sion for the balloon to land or take off on the day. You could either arrive with
your dad and bridesmaids, or take off after the ceremony with your new husband. This, howev er, all needs to be done in day light and very good conditions. Always make sure you have a back-up plan ju s t in case the weather turns. I t is also impera tive to hire an experienced pilot who has a good knowledge of the area, and will be able to take you to and from your destinations. You may need to be driven to a field close to your home to enable plenty of room for equipment, and vice versa on the way back.

Princess’s visit was a day to remember
GUIDING took centre stage last week as Waddow Hall welcomed a royal visi tor.
As we reported on Thursday, Her
Royal Highness Princess Sophie, the Countess of Wessex was in the Ribble Valley to unveil a plaque marking the opening of a new adventure house. The president of Girlguiding UK, the
Countess spend more th an an hour meeting Rainbows, Brownies, Guides and civic dignitaries. I t was a day to remember for the
Waddow Hall staff and all the volun teers who ensure that the Girl Guiding tra d i t io n is carried on successfully throughout the Ribble Valley. Waddow Hall, a 17th Century manor
house set in 178 acres of countryside, has been used by Girlguiding UK since 1927 as a place for training and camps. I t is currently used by more than 10,000 people from all over the world each year. Here we print more pictures from last Tuesday’s visit.
