Louise earns top
spot in annual event
THE Ribble Valley Modern Pentathlon team’s annual competition yet again saw Whalley all-rounder Louise Highton come out on top. The 17-year-old produced a clean sweep
at the Roefield event by scooping the open ladies tetrathlon, triathlon and biathlon after recording the best swim for her age group and finishing third overall in the fencing event. Only fellow Ribble Valley competitor and Northern Ireland Commonwealth sil ver medalist Jon Willis, and Lee Ormerod of Fleetwood, narrowly beat the local ath lete, having scored, at most, four more vic tories. Over 110 competitors from the north of
England, and one individual from Corn wall, travelled to Clitheroe for the shoot ing, swimming, fencing and running event, which saw Louise joined by her fellow team mate Sara Burns in second and her sister Liz Highton in third for the tetrathlon. Bums also finished third in the biathlon and the triathlon. Meanwhile, the open men’s tetrathlon
was won by Crmerod, while Willis finished in third place.
Further local success saw Michael
Smith finish second in the biathlon and triathlon after having the joint best run, joined by Willis, again with third, in the triathlon. Smith and Willis then combined points
with Chris Waddington to claim the biathlon and triathlon team accolade. The masters competition saw Susan
Bums win the biathlon and triathlon with best run and best swim, just ahead of Susan Shaw who finished second in both disciplines. The male equivalent masters event saw Tony Bush achieve the best run to win the

biathlon and finish second in the triathlon before joining forces with Andrew Smith and Peter Waddington to win the biathlon and triathlon team events. In the Junior ranks 14-year-old Liz
Highton won the Under 17s triathlon thanks to her swimming performance while Kathleen Walsh excelled in the run to finish first in the biathlon. The pair then teamed up with Megan Phillip to win the biathlon team event. In the Under 15s age group the Ribble
Valley club were outside the medals but Katie Vandewalle finished fourth in the triathlon and sixth in the biathlon. However Alice Fitton won the Under 13
girls’ biathlon and finished fourth in the triathlon thanks to her winning perform ance in the run, while Charlotte Dickin son finished second in the triathlon thanks to her putting in the best swimming per formance for her age group. Fitton and Dickinson then met up with Rachel Byrne to achieve first place in the Under 13s biathlon and triathlon team events. The Under 11s also met with success as
two very young competitors performed well in their first competition for the local Pentathlon club. First up was nine-year-old Abigail Fit-
ton who enjoyed the best run to win the biathlon and she was joined by six-year- old Elizabeth Greenwood who recorded a pb in the swim and finished a magnificent third in the run to finish fourth overall in the biathlon. And rounding off another successful
event was Under 17s member Duncan Burns who achieved second in the biathlon. Cur picture shows Nicola Rowley and
