“ TA B LE fo o tb a l l” has another meaning for the lads of Clitheroe Round Table, who have once again won the Area Football Competi

tion. Having won the hard-fought contest

last year, Clitheroe had the honour of hosting the event this time and Sports Officer Martin Gibson was determined to put on a tournament to remember. Both outdoor pitches at Roefield Leisure Centre were booked for three hours on a Sunday afternoon and arrangements were made to erect a marquee as a control centre for the administration side of the day, and for the post-event buffet. Having spent the previous-month

drumming up support, it came as no surprise that Martin managed to attract a record 10 teams. With three teams from Clitheroe, the old enemy Fleetwood, two from Blackburn and teams from Lancaster, Blackpool, Rossendale and Kirkham, it was clear that it was going to take some serious organisation from event co-ordinator Geoff Whalley to make the tourna ment a smooth-running success. The teams were split into two

leagues and when the holders, Clitheroe A, kicked off against their fellow tablers, Clitheroe B, the intensi ty was there for all to see. No quarter was asked or given and when the whis tle blew for full time it was the A side that set the tone for the day with a 3-2 win. Meanwhile on Pitch 2, Clitheroe C were getting hammered 5-0 by an organised Blackpool side. However, results started going right

for all three Clitheroe teams and when all the fixtures had been played Clitheroe A had won all their games and were sitting pretty at the top of their league, with Clitheroe B and C

both recovering from early setbacks and finishing a respectable third in their respective leagues. Sadly only the top two teams from each league pro gressed to the knockout stage, so it was left to Clitheroe A to fly the flag. ■ Fate then played its part in the day and Clitheroe were drawn against Fleetwood in the semi-final, with Blackpool meeting Blackburn in the other. Having been beaten by Fleet- wood on penalties in the semi-final two years ago and avenged this defeat in the final last year, everyone knew the history between the two sides and it was clear this was not going to be an easy game. When the scores were tied at 1-1 at

the end of normal time an additional five-minute “ golden goal” extra time was played and this was where fate struck again. Mter a couple of minutes a penalty was awarded to Clitheroe and this brought team captain Craig Nicholls up against the team he missed

Dance the night away

NEW dance classes for children are com ing to Clitheroe in a bid to take “bored” youngsters off the town’s streets. From tonight, Lee Carter’s Dance and

Fitness Studio in Lowergate is hosting renowned Clayton-le-Moors dance instructor David Pollard. He will be teaching children the art of

disco, cheerleading and other fun fitness dance classes from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. Later on Thursday evenings parents are catered for in salsa classes and then ballroom and Latin dancing. And who knows, we may have a world champion in our midst!

the deciding penalty against in the semi-final two years previously. This time there was no mistake as he ham mered the ball past the hapless keeper and fired his team into the final against Blackpool. The final was another tense affair

and the first half ended 0-0, thanks mainly to some superb goalkeeping displays from Clitheroe keeper Paul Barnes and his Blackpool counterpart. The defensive partnership of Colin Price and Garj' Aspin had been superb all afternoon and the final was to be no exception. The only question mark was whether the striking trio of Walter Aspinall, Paul Harrison and Craig Nicholls could somehow’ get the ball past an in-form Blackpool keeper, who had only conceded one goal all after noon. The decisive moment arrived early

in the second half when a substitution masterstroke removed Gary Aspin from the fray and brought all three

strikers onto the pitch at the same time. Leading scorer Craig Nicholls scored almost immediately and had completed a quickfire hat-trick within minutes before retiring for the day and reuniting Colin with defensive partner Gary. But Blackpool were a broken team

and there was still time for Paul Harri son to score the second hat-trick of the match and complete a 6-0 score line courtesy of some fine build-up play from Walter in midfield. So with another title to their name

and an increasing number of trophies in their cabinet, Clitheroe must now defend the Ten-Pin Bowling and Squash titles won last year. Clitheroe Round Table is always on

the lookout for new’ members, whether they are sporty or not, and anyone wishing to join should see the w’ebsite at www.rt552.org. Pictured is the w’inning squad, (s)

Selecting pictures for calendars

AN interesting exercise in choosing the right photographs for calendars was the focus of Jlibblesdale Camera Club’s first clubroom meeting of the new winter season. Calendar photography is a com

petitive area for photographers and the requirements differ from compe tition and exhibition photography. However, in contrast a successful submission is likely to be seen by thousands of people every day for a month. The picture must follow the theme of the calendar, whether local scenes, steam trains or technical sub jects for commercial companies. The pictures must be sharply

focussed, lively in their colours and have both impact on first sight and

staying power for over four weeks. If they are digital, the number of pixels is important, not least because the images often have to be cropped to the format required, possibly losing a third or more of the picture area. Members were invited to bring

along photographs with a rural theme and Liz Barlow, of Dugdales Nutrition, was on hand to say whether a slide, print or projected digital image would make it as far as being considered for a calendar of this type. As one member comment ed: “At first I was baffled, then a pat tern emerged and I could understand immediately what would be suitable and why. Liz was remarkably consis tent in her comments.”

At the end of the evening it slipped

out that member Stuart Willis had just won the Craven Herald calendar competition and, as he put it, was going to be “Mr February” . Con gratulations to him and to the other members who contributed to a very educational and entertaining evening. Tonight a workshop on printing

and mounting will be held in the club’s Chatburn clubroom at 7-30 p.m. Next Tuesday’s meeting will be a print forum, where each member is invited to bring along six prints for discussion. To find out more about the Ribblesdale Camera Club, con tact secretary Ken Geddes on 01200 423474.

Fine weather for an autumn day out

THE drizzle in Clitheroe gave way to dry roads when the coach taking Clitheroe Naturalists to the start of their walk from Slaidburn reached Waddington Fell. The rest of the day, both cloudy

and sunny, was perfect for walking. Now that summer is giving way

to autumn, there are not so many flowers in bloom, but thistles, seed heads, fungii and berries meant that there was plenty to study. The walk took a route along the Hodder riverbank to Newton, pass

ing the impressive Dunnow Hall with its tragic history of being built for a young bride who died on hon eymoon. From Newton, upward paths

through fields and tracks took the group past Crawshaw and Pain Hill farms and then on to Ellerbeck Hall. Gold Hill and Myttons Farm, by which time the day was bright and sunny. Hopes of gathering field mush

rooms were dashed, but the walk back to Slaidburn through sunlit

Shay Wood was beautiful. It was gratifying to find white campion - open in the afternoon - and devil’s bit scabious and the attractive, del icate purple fungii amethyst deceiv er, as well as a variety of ferns. There are still swallows about,

and a buzzard and a cormorant were noted as well as 52 different kinds of flowers.

The next walk on Saturday will

be led by Jean Robson and is to Pateley Bridge. Call Mrs. J. Trotter on 01200 428117 to book.
