Amsterdam when a keen water skier took to the city's canals. This in itself is dangerous - you have got narrow waterways and other water traffic to contend with. But the risks created for this skier by his chosen location pale into insignificance when you consider that he was being towed not by the customary speedboat, but by a friend driving along the canal bank in a car! Predictably, the whole sorry escapade ended

in disaster when the driver took his eyes off the road and pltmged the vehicle into the water.

/ Y \ ON reporting her car stolen a t the local police station, a woman hap-

^—■^ pened to mention that she had left her

mobile phone in the vehicle. This spurred the quick-thinking desk sergeant into action. He dialled the woman's mobile phone number, teUing the man who answered that he had seen an advert for the car in the local paper and wanted to buy it. They arranged to meet and the car thief was arrested.

/ ' i \ MOTORISTS in Kobe, Japan, have

(a®'W been on to a neat ruse to avoid paying N—^ parking fines by claiming documents have blown away in the wind. Traffic wardens have decided to fight back by experimenting with stronger glue when attaching the parking tickets to the windscreens.

/ 1 T \ DRIVING through Hamm, Ger- many, became a bit hazardous when a

'— '' large busty dummy resembling Mari lyn Munroe appeared in a shop window. Local police asked the o\vners of the store to remove the display as it was causing motorists to be distracted while driving.

/ 'X \ WHEN a priest was stopped and breathalysed in La Coruna, Spain, he

^ ' claimed that he had taken six church masses during the day and had become inebri ated on the communion wine. The police booked him anjavay.

wait for the production- ready version to come along and then sigh wistfully as you tick off all the interest ing bits th a t failed to get past the legislators and bean counters. Jaguar's latest XK coupe

T

seems to have reversed that trend. Walk around one and it is impossible to deny that in the intervening months since the Aluminium Light weight Coupe made its European debut a t the Geneva Auto Salon, the detailing has been finessed still further. This is not a car th a t plays by conventional rules. Perhaps rules is too strong

a word. Custom is possibly better, and custom tends to dictate that each successive model on a given theme is bigger and heavier than the one th a t precedes it . Not this one. This XK may be a mere 1.5cm longer than the old XK8, but thanks to that advanced aluminium con s tru c tio n , i ts weight has plummeted to 1595kg for

h is should not hap pen. Received wis dom is that you see a car debut at a motor show,

the entry-level car. This car possesses an athleticism the old car cannot match. Look a t the stance.

Whereas the XK8 was unde niably elegant, it could not really claim to be especially dynamic in appearance. The long fro nt and rear over hangs compromised cabin space and dated the design a l i t t le , b u t the la te s t car keeps the same basic prem ise, but tones up the whole look significantly.

There is also a welcome

injection of practicality to theXK. Whereas the XK8 was

astonishing in having such a huge “footprint” but such a t in y passenger compar t ment, the XK is a more spa cious car altogether. The high hipline remains, but Jaguar has worked at mak ing the interior feel a good deal airier, with a low scuttle and clever use of colour com binations.

Back to the future with Jaguar’s latest XK coupe

Jaguar has designed the

XK with a convertible model in mind, knowing that this is where the lion’s share of sales will come. There are also rumours of a diesel-engined variant, but likely to plump up the range even sooner is a su pe r charged XKR model. The standard car gets a

300 b.h.p. 4.2-litre V8, simi lar to tha t in the latest XJ saloon. Due to the X K ’s weight loss plan, this car \vill

jet to 60 m.p.h. in 5.9 sec onds and complete the standing quarter mile in 14.4 seconds. The top speed ol the XK is electronically lim ited to 155 m.p.h. The interior, meanwhile, is

rather restrained in the best Jaguar traditions. The XK8 was a car with

easily identifiable flaws but which we loved enormously. If the XK can prove half as endearing, it will be judged a success.
