Sunday, October 16th, and follow a route around the picturesque Ribble Valley setting off from West Brad ford Village Hall. Clitheroe resident Aimie Hamer
(30), of Re:fit Personal Training, was inspired to organise the run by four- year-old Amelia Dickinson, a friend’s daughter, who suffers with the condi tion. Amelia’s parents, Samantha and

Symon Dickinson, of Whalley, explained that although their daugh ter is doing very well, her current state of health is down to the contin uous treatment she receives. Samantha stressed that medical
advances achieved through life-sav ing research for which this event will raise funds, is v ital for Amelia’s future. A pupil a t Barrow Primary School,
Amelia has received unstinting sup port in dealing with her illness from teachers and staff. In fact, four mem bers of staff have been among the first to sign up for the run. Aimie urged other local people to
follow their lead, adding: “Please join us, have fun, get fit and raise some cash for this debilitating condition. You don’t have to run, you can walk, hop, crawl, whatever, but please come along. We are trying to drum up sup port and are thinking of maybe organising a social do afterwards. “We are hoping for a bigger turnout than in previous years as it’s proving a popular event.” Aimie added that parents were wel
come to bring along their children and make it a real family day out.
She asked people to specify if they
will be running or not, therefore keeping i t a serious road race for some, alongside those who just look at it as a bit of fun. All participants will be raising
vital funds to help the 7,500 people with Cystic Fibrosis, the UK’s most common life-threatening inherited disease. There is currently no cure for Cystic Fibrosis, which claims three lives a week in the UK. Aimie and Amelia’s aunt, Clitheroe
resident Gail Bailey, of Pure Health and Beauty, who organised a similar event last year, have taken part in the Great North Run and arranged other events for the cause. So far, they have raised £15,000. The DogMusic and Sports Bar in
Wellgate has offered to provide a free buffet after the race for all partici pants, a gesture which is much appre ciated by the organisers. Runners can register for the event on the day at 10 a.m., and there is a minimum dona tion of £10 in sponsorship. For further information, to register
and for advice on training, contact Aimie on 07793 955686 or Gail on 01200 442430. To make a donation, log onto

Probus members turned into frogs and croak in Lowergate!
LAUGH not, it nearly happened when Peter Watson, lecturer and broadcaster and student of things esoteric talked to Clitheroe Probus about North Country folklore. Having found th a t only a few in the
audience confessed to being superstitious, he frequently challenged the members to “have one of these”, “hold this”, “take one of these home”. The “non-superstitious” audience res
olutely refused to get involved in such goings on - well, one never knows, best not to tempt fate. . . Sprinkling his talk with recipes for
things we didn’t know we could get and certainly not suitable for a family news paper, he kept his audience alternating between nervous laughter, outright disbe lief, amused disgust at the “old ways”, and all the time th a t niggling thought “but just suppose. . . he might be right.” One of the many real-life items was a
small cross made of rowan wood and tied with red thread. A powerful defence against mischievous and evil little folk - elves, fairies, boggarts and the like. “But don’t drop it,” he said. “And cer
tainly don’t break it. If you do you’ll have a visitation and that is not a good thing.” Members all sat on their hands. No
way was th a t cross going to be passed round this mature level-headed non- superstitious collection of Clitheroe folk. The speaker said he had been giving a
talk in a room with automatic electric doors at each end, and a lady in the audi ence dropped the little wooden cross. One set of doors solemnly opened - there was no one there. The door closed and six sec onds later the other doors opened. Still no-one there, just another empty
corridor. “That was your v is itatio n passing
through,” said the speaker to his startled audience. By now reality was a scarce commodi
ty. A person having every appearance ol
Paul Duck rose to give the vote of thanks, and there was a strong feeling th a t , masochists that they were, the speaker, after having given one of the most humor ous, thought-provoking and challenging talks of the year, will be invited back to give his talk on ghosts. Probus Club has vacancies and if you
are interested in joining, please call the secretary on 01200 429207. Members meet a t the Pendle Club,
Lowergate, Clitheroe, on the first and third Fridays of the month.
Mad-COW disease cause of villager’s death?
