Mazda Hope Their 5 Can Make A Big Splash In The Mini MPV Sector.

ost cars lend to look a little old and tired when they get replaced. No t M a zd a 's Premacy mini M P V . It still looked prelty
sharp when it was withdrawn from sale in 2004. Undersold from the outset, the Premacy never chal lenged the likes o f the Vauxhall Zafira. the Citroen Xsara Picasso and the Renault Scenic in the sales charts, and rather than try to force the issue, Mazda quietly withdrew a very good car from their line up and vowed to start again from a blank sheet of paper. The result o f their efforts sits before us now in the “stylish and clean” shape o f the MazdaS.
When asked to sum up the philosophy behind the Mazdai, the best the company could come up with was the bafflingly obtuse “insightful new dimen sion o f zoom-zoom pleasure”. Rather than dip into a random marketing catchphrase generator, perhaps we can put a little flesh onto the rather good-looking bones o f the M a z d a S , now priced from £ 14,300 fi or from £ 1 5 ,9 0 0 in diesel form.
The basic shape is not dissimilar to the Premacy, offering a sharp, beaky snout and e le g a n t ly sculpted flanks. It's .still rather generic looking but a few details stand out. The roofline rakes down sharply at the rear, giving the 5 a spotty profile and the wheelarches are beefy and muscular. Keen-eyed spotters will note the rails that merge nicely with the rear tail lamp cluster, denoting sliding doors on both sides.
The origins of tlie MazdaS can be traced tlirough the Preniacy via the M X -F le x a design study, shown at the 2004 Geneva Motor Show. Originally built to demonstrate one po s sib le direction for future Mazda M P V vehicles, the M X-Fle xa received such a warm reception that many of its design principles have been incorporated virtually unchanged into die M a zd a 5 pro d u c t io n car. K e n ic h i Fukun ag a, MazdaS's Program Manager explains further, “We conceptualised die M a zd a i as a communicative and dynamic activity vehicle.

The 'communicative' pan o f the product concept relates to the interface between tlie vehicle and users, and conveys the notion that the Mazdaa is rich in user-friendly practicality. It also conveys tlie notion that the Mazdao enables passengers to inter act with each other in comfort. And it conveys the promise o f driveability diat makes for natural feel ing interaction between the MtizdaS and the driver." Okay, so as soundbites go it's not quite up there with "Ladies and gentlemen, we got liim”. but you get the point. The Mazdao is resolutely practical.
The interior has been d e s igned acco rding to Mazda's “6 + One” concept whicli aims to deliver comfortable seating for six occupants, plus an addi tional element o f utility that stresses plenty of lug gage space, walk through convenience and ample stowage space. The key theme is the open space created in the centre o f the cabin that means that every occupant has ample shoulder space and assists interaction between the occupants by ensur ing there are always sighilines between one row of .seats and another.
Although there's ample room on the inside with three rows of two seats, the MazdaS isn’t super stretch limo long. In fact at 4.505mm in length it measures just 85mm longer than the Mazda3 fami ly hatch whilst the width is identical, so there won't be any horrors when manoeuvring this wagon into a crowded multi storey car park. Despite its wheel at each comer stance, the turning circle o f just 530cm means that even if you do need to throw a shifty three-point turn, you won't need acres o f road to do so.
Mazda claim a class first for the large sliding doors on both sides. Previously
re.siricted to seriously s ize d M P V ve hic le s , these d o o rs have been designed so that they dom't swing out too far. How many times have you been forced to sheepishly apologise when the kids whack their doors into the flanks o f a parked car in a supemiarket car park? The Mazda5 solves that particular problem. These doors open fully 700mm, Mazda deeming this wide enough fora parent cany- ing an infant. The plastic tailgate is another product o f e x te nsive testing. M a zd a discovered that the tailgate mechanisms o f many M P V s and 4x4 vehicles were becoming so he avy and cum b e r some that they were diffi cult for lighter weight
operators to close. With a two-step mechanism built in, die tailgate of die Mazda5 is light and smooth in its action.
The .second and third rows o f .seats can be arranged in a number of configurations. In addition to their sliding adjustment and reclining functions, the .sec ond row also features a double-fold mechanism. Folding down the second and third row seatbacks creates a virtually flat floor for the luggage com partment. Other rivals are a little slicker in this regard, but the Mazda5 scores in terms o f ease of operation. The space between the final row o f .seats can be assigned to either a utility box or a 'karakuri' occasional seat.
Four engines have been eanmaked for die U K mar ket. Tile most popular are probably set to be the 2.0- litre diesel units, offered in eitlicr standard SIblip guise or a high power 105bhp variant. Both are fully compliunl with the latest Euro IV emissions regulations. A 1.8-litre petrol unit marks llie entry level and is good for S5bhp while a zippier 2.0-litrc petrol powerpliim o f lOfibhp rounds out the line up. M a e P h e r so n struts up front and a multi link arrangement at the back are a tried and tested for mula for good handling and Mazda haven't skimped on safely systems either, developing ;i curtain airbag that covers all llirec rows o f seats. di.stribution are aug mented by a manual brake assist booster. Dynamic Stability Control aims to keep things sltip shape.
Despite all this work, die Mazda5 will liave a tough time disrupting the current clutcli o f m in i-M P V bestsellers. Nevertheless, if you want something a little different In every school run mum. lluu fea tures a little 'zoom zoom' in its persontility and wliich feels as if a lot of thought has gone into its coiiceplion, the Mazda5 makes a sound bet.
