A NEW building at the heart of the site will provide views out to the sur rounding countryside. It will connect with (he museum and sound archive creating new accommodation which, together with the existing buildings and the gardener’s stores, will house; • Welcome, introduction, orienta

tion and retail. • Refreshment facilities. 9 A live video link to the Keep. 9 Permanent and changing high-

quality displays. 9 Immediate access to selected

parts of the sound archive collection. 9 Education and community

meeting space. 9 Fully accessible toilets. 9 Museum storage. 9 Staff accommodation.

Castle and museum as a central and integral part of the town’s identity and leisure experi ence. To achieve this it is necessary to create a

site which has maximum physical access and is fully interpreted in terms of its built and natural features and the collections and resources that it houses. The Castle site’s key heritage assets - the

Keep, museum building, the collections, the sound archive and the awesome views of the surrounding countryside - will be brought together into a complementary and cohesive visitor experience and wider resource. It will Iirovide an introduction to the town, a cele bration of local history and culture and access to stores and archives for study and enjoyment. It is intended that the museum will develop a local reputation as an enjoy able and quality place to visit and a stronger profile within the education and specialist interests sectors. The Castle and museum will add to the

critical mass of things to see and do in Clitheroe and contribute to the growing her itage and culture offer of the town and of Kib ble Valley.

Exciting times ahead for Castle site The new building would be on two

levels linked by a new easy-going stair and wheelchair-sized lift. The upper floor would become the

main entrance/reception and there would be a disabled car park area with an external platform lift for wheelchair users. The new space in the “v” shaped

walled space, between the museum and archive, would provide recep tion, shop, tea-room and toilets with direct access to both the first floor of the museum and the ground floor of

the North West Sound Archive building. A section of floor in the new struc

ture would be raised above the level of the existing gallery/walkway to provide a tea-room with stunning

views to the east, west and south. The lower level (existing ground level in the museum) would provide secondary secure access and contain new staff/kitchen facilities plus exhi bition space giving access to displays in the museum’s ground floor. Planning and listed building appli cations are expected to be lodged in

May 2006. Six key themes have been identi

fied for the museum. 9 The Story of Clitheroe. 9 The history of the Castle, the site and the house.

9 Archaeology. 9 Local geology and the geology of

Lancashire. 9 Landscapes and wildlife. 9 Industrial stories.

THIS part of the Castle site could be the scene of much change (A080805/2d) I

THE Castle Museum attracted 11,581 visitors in 2004/5. This excludes school

groups on formal taught ses sions which in recent years have been around 1,400 to 1,500 per year. In 1997, 13,700 visitors

v is ited the museum and, with the exception of 2002 when numbers again rose above 13,000, visitors have been in decline. The development plan

aims to achieve and sustain approximately 17,000 visi tors a year.

BS There are 652 schools in Lan

cashire. Together they have 183,132

pupils. In 2002, 1,580 school pupils

visited the Castle and museum. Market research has shown that there is p o ten t ia l for a huge increase.
