PrestonsGroup.Com @ 01282720742 Vauxhall Zafiraw ™ SOME cars offer a lot of scope for improve
meat. Vauxhall’s Zafira, however, was never one of them. It fulfilled its brief brilliantly
j
in offering seven-seal family transport that w'as safe, affordable, reliable and enjoyable. Replacing the Zafira was never going to be easy,
but Vauxhall has at last bitten the bullet. The one thing you can never have enough of in an
&>r
MPV-style vehicle is space and sure enough, the tale of the tape reveals that the Zafira has succumbed, if not to middle-age spread, then at least a little loos ening of the belt. Six inches longer, 1.5 inches wider and a shade
taller than the outgoing car, the latest Zafira retains the seven-seat configuration, with a middle bench seat offering three berths and two seats in the back that also fold flat into the floor. What has changed is the amount of leg room on
offer. Whereas the old car would have been hideous ly cramped with all seven seats in use, the latest model offers a little more breathing space.
iVauxhall Tigra /"XN WHEREAS the old Tigra was rather opti
\A®.^mistically dubbed a 2+2 coupe, the latest '— ' version is an unashamed two-seater. At the press of a button, the hard top folds into
the boot, turning the little coupe into a full convert ible. Two petrol engines are available, both 16-valve petrol units. The 90 b.h.p. 1.4-litre version opens proceedings at £13,750 with a Sport version starl ing at £14,500. The punchier 125 b.h.p. 1.8-htre car IS only available in Sport trim and kicks off at £15,350. There’s also a 1.3-Iitre diesel version offered for £14,250 in standard guise or £750 more as a Sport. Versions with air conditioning tack another £500 onto these prices. The cabin features wheel-mounted audio con
trols, a metallic finished fascia and a tiltable steer ing column. Both seats are height adjustable and an electronic display panel is standard on all models. The standard car comes with 15 in. alloys, a CD stereo, anti lock brakes, twin front and side airbags and sports suspension. Trade up to the Sport ver sion of the Tigra and Vauxhall include 16 in. wheels.
a silver targa roofbar, a stereo that can handle MP3s, a remote controlled alarm and an alloy-effect centre console. Aluminium pedals, a leather- trimmed sports steering wheel and front fog lights are also included. A leather pack is offered as an option with seats, head restraints and door trims finished m hide and ESP also an option. Vauxhall has the benefit of others’ mistakes to
draw upon m developing the Tigra. Many of the early coupe-cabriolet models looked the part but were cursed with woeful luggage space. This time round, the Tigra doesn’t attempt to wedge in a pair of useless vestigial rear seats, instead offering a use ful boot of 440 litres. Even with the hood cassette, m place there’s 250 litres available - more than enough for a weekend’s light luggage for two. There’s a good deal of thoughtful attention to
detail. The heated rear window features a special scratchproof glass and the tiny front and rear over hangs make the car easy to park. One thing has con tinued from the previous Tigra model. This is still a car that will sell on the strength of its looks.
, 7 A ' > n i ,A . # 5 'nil! HOU54X8ZII ?. I P 1 >1 1 ‘ 11 1 I j i- ' — f t - - 4 ,, f ^ -f r As before, the seating system is so versatile that
the Zafira can be confi^red in two, three, four, five six or seven-scat guises in a matter of seconds. Mos' buyers will run in five-seat format, and in this modi the Vauxhall can cope with 620-litres of luggage ■ fully 20 more than the old car. A particularly interesting feature is the optiona
panorama roof. With four large glass panels, thi: system offers passengers a light, airy atmosphere ir the back, while tinted glass and a powered shadi protect against dazzle. A wide range of engines are offered and the Zafin
marks the debut of Vauxhall’s 140 b.h.p. l.S-litn ECOTEC power plant.
From the VXR sub brand of high-performanci
vehicles, this model can call upon a 240 b.h.p. powei plant that will rocket the car to 60 m.p.h. in scvei seconds flat and on to a top speed of 144 m.p.h. With prices starting at £12,995 for the 1.6-litn
Expression model, Vauxhall aims to put a big hoh in the hopes of the budget contenders.

SHOULD you look beneath the Colour Collection’s vivacious
^ hues (Twilight Blue, Carlo Blue,
Thunder Grey, Eclipse Black and Crys tal Silver), there is a reasonably stan dard special edition situation. Prices are the same as for equivalent Yaris T3 models, in spite of the additional fea tures which have a combined value of £900 -or £1,250 m the case of the 1.3- htre versions with alloy wheels. That means on-the-road figures start
ing at £8,595 for the 1.0-litre VVT-i three-door version and £9,095 for the 1.3 VVT-i three-door variant (including those alloy wheels). Five-door models cost an extra £500 and air conditioning plus a roof spoiler is a £500 option. The Colour Collection Yaris models
should stand out more thanks to metal lic paint finish, front tog lamps, chrome exhaust finishers, body colour-matched door mirrors and bumpers, and on the 1.3 variants those alloys we mentioned
earlier. On the inside, features include scuff plates, height-adjustable leather- trimmed steering wheel with built-in audio system controls and a leather and chrome finished gear knob. All these items are in addition to the regular Yaris T3 specification, which includes a four- speaker sound system with CD player, remote central double locking, split-fold ing and sliding rear seat, electric front windows and vanity mirrors tor the driver and front seat passenger.
Toyota Corolla Colour Collection i /X ^ T H E Toyota Corolla has always
(A®.^had a sound reputation as a medi-. um-sized hatchback that is both
reliable and practical. Styling updates, however, have improved
the looks and, with added safety features along with improved equipment levels, Toyota’s stalwart can still mix it with com petitors. Toyota has now also improved the value-for-money appeal with the introduc tion of the Colour Collection Special Edi tion models.
Toyota has been targeting the younger
drivers by promoting the T3 trim level as a more sports-oriented model wnth new body styling features and a hi-tech interior. It has now carried this further with the Colour Collection Special Edition, which is based on this sporty Corolla T3 grade. Three and five-door hatchback, saloon and estate versions are available with a choice of three engines options depending on the body style chosen. The engine choices are 1.4-litre and 1.6-htre VVTi petrol or 2.0-

litre D-4D diesel power. Prices start at £10,995 for the 1.4-litre VVTi three-door model and rise to £14.495 for the 2.0-litre D-4D estate. Toyota reckons this saves £1,400 over a similarly specified standard model car. Buyers get a T Sport body styling kit with side skirts and deep front and rear air dams. There’s wider metallic paint colour choice of Igneous Grey, Ixion Blue and Eclipse Black, as well as Silver Steel metallic. Ixion Blue cars come with Sandu design six-spoke 15 in. alloy wheels.

terms of specification and in tact add metallic paint (normally a £325 option) at no extra cost. Body-wise, there’s a choice between a five-door hatchback or a saloon. .And the “colour” bit? Well basically,
you get a wide choice of metallic hues (Eclipse Black, Silver Steel, Carlo Blue,

Silver Fern and Metropolis Grey), plus you get colour-matched bumpers, mir rors and door handles. You also get a chromed front grille surround and, if you’re interested, a ‘Colour Collection’ badge at the rear. The basic price buys you a 1.8-litre petrol-powered model but there’s also the option of a 2.0-litre D4- D diesel version. Go for the petrol vari ant and you can opt to pay extra for sequential automatic transmission.
Normal Avensis features include an
eight-speaker CD sound system with steering wheel controls, air conditioning, a trip computer, multi-adjustable front seats and a steering column that adjusts for both reach and rake. Security is pro vided by remote central double locking, an alarm and an immobiliser. . The Colour Collection package works because the Avensis itself works: why else would sales be soaring?
