ber of UK motorists in a survey -17% con sidered themselves Oppositional Drivers, 56% opted for the Defensive Driving catego ry and 26% chose Supportive Driving as the criteria that best fitted them. Age, sex and location seemed to be the
biggest factors in the results of the survey: Men proved more aggressive, with 19% of those questioned going for the Oppositional category, while the 25-35 age group also had problems retaining their composure - 29% believing they were aggressive drivers. Respondents with children under five years

Driving is certainly becoming increasingly
stressful and in many cases it is the attitudes of drivers themselves that are causing this rise in temperature. If everyone took a step back, evaluated their driving style and made the effort to be more considerate, the roads would be a much happier place.

The Subaru Forester comes closer to that ideal than many realise and at prices which few would believe. The latest models have taken a promising for mula and refined it still fur ther.

look, thorough revisions to engines and suspension, class-leading power and per formance and a much nicer interior. All these things should
further enhance the Subaru Forester’s appeal as the best driving crossover sports util ity vehicle on the market. Prices start from £17,595 for the entry-level 2.0X model (which now, with 158 PS, has 33PS more than before), while the turbo-charged range now starts with the 2.5XT at £21,995.

So let me start with the
fresh look. There are revi sions to the front wings, bon net, bumper, grille and head lamps, giving what Subaru sees as far greater road-pres ence arid visual dynamics. Larger wheels plus design changes at the rear are all aimed at making this Forester look taller, more imposing and closer to a con ventional SUV. Under the
bonnet, the latest four-cam naturally-aspirated 2.0 litre engine is the most powerful in its class, improving on the previous 2.0-litre variant’s top speed by 10 m.p.h. to 122 m.p.h. and slashing the 0-60 m.p.h. time from 11.1 seconds to 9.4 seconds. This substantially beats
all 2.0 litre petrol SUV rivals, such as the Nissan X- Trail, Honda CRV and Toy
ota RAV4, yet the Forester offers similar fuel economy and exhaust emissions with, for example, 37.7 m.p.g. on the Extra Urban Cycle. As far as turbo-charged
petrol Forester models are concerned (there is still no diesel), Subaru has dumped the 2.0 XT model but uprat ed its more recently intro duced 2.5-Iitre XT counter part, giving it an extra 19
PS, raising power to 230 PS and reducing the 0-60 m.p.h. time to 5.7 seconds for the manual. You can also order this variant with a clever new automatic gearbox fea turing sportshift manual selection and linked to Sub aru Vehicle Dynamics Con trol. This apparently boosts
handling, roadholding and accident avoidance.
