A TEENAGER with green fingers is starting to grow into a celebrity amongst the gardening

recently featured in the UK’s leading gardening charity, the Royal Horti cultural Society publica tion, “The Garden”, was asked to star in an episode of the prime-time BBC programme after being interviewed by one of the show’s presenters Carol Klein, at the Royal Horti cultural Show, Ta tto n Park, in July. The former Clitheroe
Royal Grammar School pupil, who helps run the family nursery on the out
skirts of Bolton-by-Bow- land, has made an impres sion among plant lovers for his 140 varieties of cro- cosmia, amassed in just three years a t such a young age. His father, Peter Foley,
proprietor of the nursery, remarked how unique it was for a boy of John’s age to show his level of enthu siasm for the plants. “He has always shown
an interest in gardening from a very young age,” commented Mr Foley. “His interest grew after he started to help me run the family business a f te r I became ill.” The teenager, who also
likes mountain biking, will study ho rt icu l tu re at Askham Bryan College ne.xt year. The new series of “Gar
deners’ World”, presented by Monty Don, will start on Friday, August 26th on BBC 2 at 8 p.m.
Don’t take any risks with home security
WITH summer in full swing, a local Police Community Support Officer IS warning householders about the dangers of keeping doors and windows open. p e s o David Reid, of Chtheroe
police, spent a day patrolling the Salthill, Tower Hill and Ribbles- dale areas of the town and found many homes had been left insecure.
He said: “People are leaving
their doors open and leaving their belongings in the doorway. “Simple steps can be taken to
ensure doors are properly locked and windows closed. Burglars are often opportunistic, looking for an insecure building to get into to steal property and ignoring the places where they might have to force
their way in.” He added: “If your home, garage or shed is properly secure, the risk of it being burgled is greatly reduced. “Please keep doors and windows
locked even when you are at home - a door or window left open while you do some gardening could be just the opportunity a passing bur glar will spot.”
Wipe out this killer weed!

A KILLER weed, which threatens livestock across the Ribble Valley, must be controlled if the health of countless animals is to be safeguarded. Ragwort, a yellow-flowered weed,
results in the painful death of horses, ponies and donkeys each year. There is a greater risk of animals
eating this highly to.xic weed towards the end of summer as pastures die out or when it is mistakenly dried in haj^. Now the RSPCA is urging landown
ers across the region to rid their fields and verges of the plant, which is lethal whether eaten fresh or dried. Dave Millard, RSPCA regional
superintendent for the North, said: “Ragwort kills, so it is essential horse owners are vigilant and that land own ers take action to wipe out this perni
cious weed. “There is no cure for ragwort poison
ing and the only effective prevention is elimination of the plants before they
claim lives.” Using an appropriate weed-killer can
effectively control ragwort. Digging out the entire plant may
also prove successful, although no root must be left behind.
0 VANDALS caused £100 damage when they attacked the bodywork of a Ford Fiesta saloon parked in Brown Street, Clitheroe. Police are investigating the incident.
