been introduced, with a Design-trimmed 1.4 HDi model and a Furio-spec 1.1-litre version. Prkes across the range continue to sit in the £7,995 to £11,995 bracket. Although it shares its chassis, drivetrains and a number of body and interior parts with the larger C3, don’t think of this car as

L^®.^Jner right out of the blocks. Citroen has —' divested of the need to seat seven people and
the C4 looks extremely svelte, both m five-door hatchback form and three-door Coupe format. This being Citroen, we can take a whole host of
innovations for granted and the C4 doesn’t come up short. An involuntary lane departure warning sys tem aims to prevent drivers from dozing off at the wheel. Moving dual function Xenon headlamps offer improved lighting when cornering. Citroen has acheived a full set of stars m the
EuroNCAP safety tests. The multi-function steer ing wheel houses a whole host of the controls from the centre console, ensuring that the driver is in touch with the control of the vehicle at all times.
Building in features more often seen on luxury cars is an ongoing theme, the C4 featuring laminated side window glass. Not only does this aid safety m the result of an accident, it also provides enhanced protection against crime and boosts the cabin’s acoustic qualities. The C4 even features a scented air freshener built into the dashboard to prolong that new car smell. A translucent instrument cluster that adjusts to ambient light levels, giving a clear readout whatever the light conditions. The trim levels are split 50/50 between comfort
and sportiness. Those valuing the finer things in life can select from, m ascending order, LX, SX and Exclusive while sports fans will go for V'l', VTR or VTS. The VTR Plus level provides something of the best of both worlds.

The shape gets the thumbs up right from
the outset. Mazda’s designers are currently m a bit of a purple patch and it’s been a while since we’ve seen a clumsy shape emerge from the company’s design studios. Think of it as a longer and sleeker looking Audi A3 silhou ette and you’re not too far off the mark. The chunky C-pillar is probably the most distinc tive styling signature and the complexity of the design suggests it would have been very easy to get wrong, but the little Mazda pulls I t
off nicely. The interior is very similar to the MazdaG
insofar as it offers a resolutely modern design with decent levels of equipment. The steering wheel and overlapping aluminium-rimmed dials look very sporting and there are some nicely detailed metallic touches dotted about the cabin. The minor controls on the centre console are all very easy to get to grips with and upspec models feature an LCD screen that rises out of the dashtop to house func tions such as satellite navigation. Five engines are slated at the moment, with 1.4-litre, 1.6-litre and 2.0-htre petrol versions plus a pair of MZ-CD common rail diesel power plants. The 150 b.h.p. 2.0-htre petrol engine will be of most interest to those sub scribing to Mazda’s whole ‘zoom-zoom’ phi losophy and I t ’s
^ return for an engine with this much go, although the 19Gg/km emissions figure will probably have company car drivers checking out the diesel versions. Straight off the bat it’s apparent where the

advances are, with refinement and general drivetrain smoothness being a standout fea ture of the Mazda3. The five-speed manual gearbox is one of the slickest in class. The Mazda3 should be applauded for
bringing big car ride quality into a manage- able sized package. Equipment levels are, as you would expect from Mazda, generous and
i aggressive pricing is as you would expect. The MazdaS is a very mature and self-
: assured proposition. A good all-rounder, it i doesn’t grab the headlines yet the over whelming impression is of a quality, eminent-

merely a scaled down version of Citroen’s sphencal supermini. The styling marks a different direction with a C3-style bulbous nose allied to a far edgier, angular back end. Four engines - all borrowed from the C3 - are
offered, although the range-topping unit is avail able in two distinct forms. A 61 b.h.p. 1.1-litre opens proceedings but the mid-range 75 b.h.p. 1.4- litre petrol also looks good value, priced from £8,795. For ultimate economy, the 1.4-litre HDi models (from £9,095) will be the first port of call, while the VTS version marks the top of the range priced from £11,995. The speakers, gear change gaiter, ventila

The quality of trim material is way higher than before with a high-gloss piano black finish across the fascia. It’s cer tainly as good as any sports car in the sub £20,000 bracket. £16,600) and a 125 b.h.p. 1.8-litre unit f from £15,600) shift the MX-5 a little further upmarket compared to its predecessor, but prices are still accessible. The famously wristy short-throw sports gear change has been retained. Improvnng a legend isn’t easy. Fortunately,
Mazda has been astute enough to refine the MX-5 where refinements were possible, but has left the essential character unchanged. More than 700,000 buyers liked the origi
nal MX-5 recipe. Expect big numbers from this successor.
