CLITHEROE August
20 BRIGG TOWN..........H 23 Fleetwood Town..........A 27 Harrogate Railway FAC A 29 SPALDING U TD ...... H September
By Adrian Capstick CLITHEROE EC’S aspi-
■V- rations for the new season are to try and mount a play-off push. The Blues kick-off their
2005-06 UniBond First Division campaign a t home to old foes Brigg Town on Saturday, and manager Tommy Lawson has a very positive mindset of what he wants from his players this term. This time last season,
then boss Lee Sculpher took Clitheroe into the league full of confidence, hoping to be the surprise package.
'V Now, with a new man at the helm with a proven track record at this level, those expectations have increased, and he is up for challenge. “You’ve got to set goals
and be positive, and mid table to play-offs is the aim,” said Lawson. “I t ’s getting exciting
now, I’m looking forward to finalising my squad this week and adding the finish ing touches. “Eight of the squad will
be new faces for certain, and, knowing football, if
everything goes according to plan, we’ll be ready come the weekend.” Saturday sees the Blues
take on the side that they share the most memorable moment of their history \vith. Brigg are the opening
visitors to Shawbridge in the 10 th anniversary sea son of the sides’ meeting at Wembley to contest the 1995-96 FA Carlsberg Vase. Since then, the two sides
have only met twice, last season, and in both games the honours finished even (1-1 and 0-0), so given the history and the tight nature of those encounters last time out, it makes an ideal opening home game. And what’s more. Law-
son has been intrigued by the history between the two clubs, he said: “I ’ve been listening to Keith Lord’s stories and they are just fascinating. “Coming from outside
the area, it is all new to me and Keith remembers it like it was yesterday. “I ’m not too concerned
about their side though, we know about them but I’ll be putting my energy into my side.”
The Blues’ second game
is away to newly-promoted Fleetwood Town on Tues day (August 23rd) and Lawson expects a “hostile” reception: “Fleetwood will always kick and scratch. “I’ve never taken a side
to Fleetwood and not seen hostility in a game. “I’m looking to mn both
games and get our first vic tory under our belts as soon as possible. “I certainly won’t be set
tling for two points.” On the player front,
Clitheroe have gone from one keeper to four quality stoppers in no time at all, which has led to Danny Woodhead going out on loan to Barnoldswick Town, while Lee Pickup and Peter Collinge battle it out for the number one shirt in Andy Paxton’s absence. Collinge appeared in his
first game for the Blues against Barrow Reserves last Friday night, and looks like an excellent signing, given that he started pre season playing for Accring ton Stanley, where he acquitted himself well in the Conference side’s 3-0 defeat to Burnley, all com
petition that Lawson wel comes. He said: “We had a
major issue with Andy Paxton picking up a five- week ban at Atherton LR at the end of last season, which means he misses the s ta r t of the season, but we’ve been fortunate to have Lee Pickup, who has been very impressive, appear from the reserves, and now this last week a lad called Peter Collinge, who has been equally as good in training. “Peter was released by
Bury last season, and he’s been at Accrington Stanley and Ashton Utd in pre-sea- son. “I do know which one
between the two I ’ll be starting with come Satur day, but I won’t be telling anyone until I’ve told them first.” He added: “I ’ve been
getting good feedback from the players, and the ‘will I, wont I feature’ has only aided training. “They know that if they
train hard and wait their chance, then they will be rewarded. “Competition for places is very healthy for me, and
is one of the great things about football which the players are thriving off. “There are a lot of
requirements at Clitheroe this year, and we need this kind of spirit if we are to meet our aspirations.” After Saturday’s match
Lawson will be stoking up the club’s annual summer BBQ at Shawbridge. Apparently his pinny is
already ironed and he’s rar ing to meet the fans face to face.
There will also be similar
opportunities to meet the reserve team management and ladies’ manager too. The club have just
installed a new pool table, care of sponsors Carlsberg, and plan to open most evenings and Saturday afternoons during the sea son, even when there aren’t any matches on, as they want to create a social club atmosphere. Tickets for the BBQ,
where there will also be pool competitions and a sports quiz, are £5 and £3- 50 tor season ticket holders and social members, and tor further details, contact Mark
Gidlow (07775552423).
