Clitheroe 422324 (Editorial), 422323 (Advertising), Burnley 422331 (Classified) 26 Clitheroe Advertisers Times, Thursday, August 18th, 2005 www.clitheroetoday.co.uk Couple’s role in international dance success

A COUPLE of Clitheroe folk dancers helped their team win a placing in an international competi tion. Retired teachers Mr

and Mrs Jim and Denise Atherton, of Chatburn Park Drive, are members of The Adlington Folk Dancers and helped the team gain second place in a folk dance competition in Lithuania. The Adlington dancers

perform English Country dances from the 17th and 18th Centuries. The team is based in the village of Adlington Cheshire, but members travel from as far away as Preston and Clitheroe to take part. A total of 15 teams

took part in the dance competition. The first prize went to a team from

A

Norway, Adlington repre senting England were sec ond and a team represent ing Hungary were in third place. The eight-day festi val came to an end with a closing ceremony, in which all the teams par

ticipated in front of a massive audience in the city centre. Jim and Denise, who took up folk dancing as a hobby around 10 years ago, are also members of the Whalley Folk Dance

Club, Folk North West and Manchester Folk Dance Club. Pictured are the team

with Lithuanian Guides. Jim and Denise can be seen standing behind the guides.(s)

Walkers hit the peaks to help village children

by Natalie Cox

FIVE walkers are feeling “peaky” after completing a gru elling challenge. The team climbed the highest

peaks in Scotland, England and Wales to raise money for Thorney- holme Pre School. George Alpe, Stephen Bennett,

Nathan Calton and Mel Shutes, were joined on the Three Peaks 24- hour Challenge by Joe Lingard. The quintet scaled Ben Nevis,

Scafell and Snowdon in 23 hours, 10 minutes, raising some £2,245 in the process. The money will be used to buy

equipment for the village preschool attended by youngsters one after noon a week in the year before they join the school’s reception class. The team would like to thank all

those who supported the event, and Barclays Bank for giving some especially James Alpe Ltd for the match funding. Pictured, from the provision of transport, Townson left, are George Alpe, Joe Lingard, (Bros) Fuels Ltd for providing Mel Shutes, Nathan Calton and some fuel for the 1,000 mile journey Stephen Bennett, (s)

They’ve helped 1,400 people into real jobs!

AN organisation which helps dis abled people across the North-West find rewarding employment has cel ebrated its 10th anniversary. North West E. Net, based at

Chapel House, in Shawbridge Street, Clitheroe, has helped count less people train for jobs and take their rightful place in the employ ment marketplace over the past decade. Development manager Mr Colin

Thornton explained: “The ‘E’ in our name stands for employment, equality and education - principles that we still stand for as we cele brate our 10th anniversary in our office in Clitheroe. “Our organisation helps 27 mem

ber organisations in the North- West to develop employment and training services for disabled peo ple.

“We have been at the forefront of

many new developments in training and employment for disabled peo ple, including the Government’s ‘New Deal for Disable People’ pro gramme, that has been highly suc-

cessful for us and our broker col leagues. “We have placed some 1,400 peo

ple into real jobs since 2001.” Our picture shows, from the left,

Geoff Jackson and Paul Evans, who were instrumental in setting up North West E. Net, and the

Mayor of Clitheroe, Coun. Allah Knox, planting a tree to commemo rate the organisation’s 10th anniversary, (s). ® For more information about

And now for next year!

PLANS are already in hand for next j^ear’s Bowland Festival af ter this year’s event was declared the best yet. More than 1,200 people from across the

UK flocked to the third annual Bowland Festival, held in early June. It celebrated the wildlife, landscape, heritage and rural life of the Forest of Bowland Area of Out

standing Natural Beauty. A selection of guided walks and events

showed at first hand what farmers and landowners are doing to manage the land for the benefit of wildlife, or allowed people to explore the area’s newly-open access land. In addition, evening presentations and a tour of Bowland Brewery were added to a diverse programme of 58 events. A wide range of individuals and organi

sations, all experts in their field guided the events. Last year’s favourites, such as the moorland safaris to see one of England’s rarest birds, the hen harrier, the night bat and moth walk, and new events such as the short-eared owl safari and Stocks Reservoir circular walk proved very popular. One of the Bowland Festival's main aims

is to support and promote sustainable tourism in the Forest of Bowland area. RSPB Conservation Manager Roy Taylor said: “Events such as the Bowland Festival encourage contributions'to the local econo my through spending on accommodation, local goods and services. This proves that agricultural and commercial businesses can thrive while conserving and enhancing the environment.” Next year’s event is already being organ

ised by the Forest of Bowland AONB Part nership, RSPB’s Birds of Bowland Project, United Utilities pic, Lancashire Rural Futures, Lancashire County Council and Countryside Service and Wyre Borough Council. ® To receive advance information about

next year’s Bowland Festival, call01484 861148 or email anna.sugrue@rspb.org.uk

Helping put town on map

A CLITHEROE-BASED website develop ment company is helping to put Clitheroe on the map.

Clitheroe in 1998 and both company direc tors, Phill Horrocks and Clare O'Neill, live in the town. Now they have moved the growing business to the idyllic setting of Shawbridge Mill, just on the outskirts of Clitheroe town centre. Over the past seven years. Branches

Design has established a proven track record in providing companies of all sizes with hard-working websites that drive and bene fit businesses. The Clitheroe company’s client base ranges from one-man-operations to global multi-million pound companies. Commenting on the company’s reloca

tion, director, Phill Horrocks said: “The new office at Shawbridge Mill is excellent with fantastic opportunities for increased growth, and better overall location.” Fellow director Clare O’Neill added:

“Branches Design is rapidly developing with a great deal to offer both local and national businesses. There is a fantastic sense of ener gy, creativity and potential for growth here that we want t i communicate through the new web site, which in turn will attract new visitors and businesses.” Branches Design is currently undertaking

the task of giving the Backridge Farm com plex a website that will show off its scenic Ribble Valley location to its fullest poten tial, allowing online visitors to get a flavour of what's going on and what services are available.
