(^®^so simple. If you had a fam- ' ---- ' i l y you either bought a saloon, an estate, or if you were a little more avant-garde, a hatch back. The Renault Espace changed the

plot, introducing the idea of MPV people carriers and since then the traditional categories have crum bled somewhat. The entry-level 1.3- litre Mitsubishi Space Star is a prime example. Smaller than a mini-MPV yet still larger than something like a supermini-MPV, the 1.3-litre Space Star Mirage has one thing that brooks no debate. The price. In the case of the entry-level 1.3-

/that’s performed so well in the sales charts to such little
acclaim? The Shogun Sport has been a con
sistent winner for Mitsubishi, yet most people would struggle to pic ture it. With a subtly refreshed front end, the latest Shogun Sport line-up aims to blow the opposition away. The most noticeable change is a
reshaped grille. A pair of engines are available, with the diesel version being the most popular option. The 2.5-litre turbo diesel also powers the L200 Double Cab pick up, but if you think this signals an agricultural approach, think again. Idling is qui eter, although still not exactly hushed, but the four-cylinder unit
makes good figures, 177 Ib/ft of torque available at a subsonic 2,000 rpm. A variable nozzle turbo-charger plumps up peak power by a lusty 16 per cent, the peak figure of 114 b.h.p. still giving little hint as to the sinewj' nature of the engine. Should you want for the smooth
power delivery of a big petrol engine, the big 3.0-litre V6 petrol engine is the one to go for. While the diesel can trump its predecessor’s figures across the board, the petrol engine is actu ally down on power - how often do we get to say that? The reason for the engine being throttled back from 174 b.h.p. to 168 b.h.p. is to meet stringent Euro Step III emissions regulations. Performance is little changed and the 22.6 m.p.g. average

litre Space Star Mirage variant, the asking price is an entirely reason able £8,999, despite increased levels of equipment and a comprehensive design overhaul. There’s also a 1.3- litre Classic derivative for £1,000 more.
Star Those who recall earlier iterations
of the Space Star will appreciate the facelift that’s been visited upon this model. With a colour-keyed front bumper, an integrated grille, black protective mouldings and revised headlights and indicators, the look is a good deal more contemporary. The interior has also come in for a freshening. The upholstery is markedly superior to the ‘old’ Space Star, as is the quality of the plastics

used about the cabin. The centre console has been redesigned to bring it into the here and now, as has the steering wheel. There are even cup holders for rear pa^engers. There are three trim levels avail

Mirage is the most basic but to be fair, it does include items like metal lic paint, dual airbags, an RDS stereo, central locking, power steer ing, alloy wheels, an “alloy effect” dashboard and gearknob, electric front windows and power-operated ' mirrors. Classic adds ABS brakes and CD player among other things. The 1.3-litre engine being used
here is one of the older ones on Mit subishi’s books, developing 81 b.h.p.

consumption is still as depressing as ever. Likewise, you’ll still be able to tow 2,800kg, climb at angles of up to 370 and wade at depths of up to 500mm. On top of that, the seats fold into a bed and you can carry up to 58.5 cubic feet of clutter with length enough for anything from a surfboard to a grandfather clock. Three mainstream trim levels are
on offer - Classic and Equippe for diesel customers and Equippe and Elegance for V6 buyers, although there’s also the leather-seated War rior special edition to consider. Either way, you get power steering, electric power for the mirrors, win dows and sunroof, central locking, twin front airbags, an immobiliser and a decent quality stereo.

many MPV-style touches in the five-seat cabin. The controls are also ergonomically excellent, with the gearlever positioned almost halfway up the centre console. No fewer than five engines are offered.
The 140 b.h.p. 1.8-litre and 147 b.h.p. 2.2- litre petrol units look strong, while the 120 b.h.p. and 150 b.h.p. 1.9-litre turbo-diesel power plants are tried and tested. Of more interest is a 2.4-litre diesel -
the.most pow erful engine of its kind in the class - which cranks out 200 b.h.p. and promises real world fuel savings and hefty torque. The Signum platform has actually
t
proved quite a good foundation from which to sprout the Croma. Fundamentally wide, it allows a number of features to be built into the chunky centre console which sub sequently means that the buttons don’t need to be the size of pinheads, something you’ll appreciate when trying to adjust the controls. Fiat has helped by mounting a number

of controls on the steering wheel, itself infi nitely adjustable. Standard equipment on the entry-level
model runs to six airbags, multi-adjustable front seats, a trip computer, anti-lock brakes, a CD stereo, attractive alloys and optional satellite navigation. Even on the first step of the Croma podium. Fiat has gone to great lengths to make it feel special. Suffice it to say that anyone can find their ideal driving position (the model meets the needs of 99% of the population) with the numerous seat settings (electric adjust ment is an option). The Croma adds a host of sophisticated
devices and systems that make it a new benchmark in its segment. Examples include ESP stability control, xenon head lights, up to nine airbags. Fiat’s CON NECT Nav-F sat nav system, a Hi-Fi with eight speakers and a subwoofer, cruise con trol, automatic sequential transmission, a double sunroof with an extensive glazed area and alloy wheels. Other nice touches include large door mirrors with aspherical mirrors that ensure outstanding visibility.

more enduring successes, notching up more than four and a half million sales. The lat est version hopes to continue in this vein. Although the Panda was last sold in the
/'gN . FIAT has proved masters at mak- ing tiny cars with enormous appeal. ' The Panda has been one of Fiat’s
UK in 1995, it retains a strong identity and this will help kick-start sales of the latest car. Unlike some of Fiat’s recent offerings that have featured rather ‘challenging’ styling, the design of the Panda is straight forward, and appealing. It does feature a few stylish touches however, including the profile of the glazed area that arches back to a neat quarter window which in turn butts up against an enormous vertical rear light cluster. The Panda also features well-defined
+ i/ t i j ;
‘hips’ that taper forward and integrate with the front wheelarch and headlight areas very slickly. In being able to integrate a good deal of stylish features without the car looking bitty, the designers should be applauded. 'The interior design is clearly Fiat, with a
high mounted gear lever and a no-frills look to the fascia. Although it’s obviously built down to a price, like its predecessor this becomes an integral part of the car’s charm. It’s also the first car in this class to offer no fewer than six airbags as standard on some models. You can choose fewer than six airbags if
you wish, although driver and passenger airbags are standard on all models. Even the 1.2-litre Dynamic model is fitted with anti lock brakes, and brake assist at no extra cost. You’ll find £25,000 executive cars that will require you to tick the options box for some of these features, so to find them in a £7,000 city car is a testa ment to Flat’s commitment to safety. Two petrol engines are offered, opening
with the entry-level 1.1-litre for those on a tight budget. Few will regret shelling out a few hundred pounds extra for the more powerful 60 b.h.p. 1.2-litre 8v unit which looks set to be the most popular engine option. Also bound to be much in demand is a 70 b.h.p. 1.3-litre Multijet diesel engine ' that returns quite astonishing fuel figures.
