Equestrian Carol had to ride ‘on

GISBURN-BASED eq u e s tr ian Miss Carol Richardson was literally riding "on the hoof" when she competed in the recent International
Show Jumping Show in Damascus. Miss Richardson, who Grand Prix won by Saudi
was the only British rider to take up the invi tation to compete in the event, was accompanied in Syria by her partner and trainer, Mr N ick Saville. The local horsewoman
had arrived at the show with just 24 hours to pre pare herself and the horse, which had been provided by her hosts, as she had been forced to wait for four hours at Damascus airport. The delay was because there had been no visas waiting for her. During the competition, Miss Richardson and her

cess in the show made her a favourite with the crowd, which greeted her entry into the ring with a foot- ball-style chant. She also became something of a national celebrity on Syrian television. At the awards dinner, she
was given invitations to take part in many future shows in the Middle East and contracts for her and Mr Saville to take on train ing, both at their Panama Sports Horses stable in Gis- burn and in the Middle
East. • Just before taking part
in the Syrian event, Miss Richardson had taken part
in a premier show at Gle- neagles where she qualified Ludicrous for the National Grade C final at Hickstead, and enjoyed many other top placings with her team.
Working out helps sick children
A GROUP of members of Hicks Health and Rackets Club, Clitheroe, worked out for 24 hours to help
sick children. Many others, ranging in
age from three to 74, spent as much time as they could spare at the marathon. The total raised will be about £ 2,000. The money is going to
"Step Out for Starlight," which funds special holi days for sick children. The club, and many like it, sup ports the charity every
year. The club's nine instruc
tors led the efforts and our picture shows Kim Salis bury taking her turn with the enthusiasts. (090400/8/16)

the pressure group, said the shortfall in places had occurred in the Mellor, Salesbury and Wilpshire areas of the Ribble Valley, not in the Whalley and Simonstone area as had been thought. “Our prime concern is
that the same thing will happen next year,” he said. He said that the group
had set up an “And Count ing” programme which would not stop until it had achieved its goal of a new
school. County Coun. George
Slynn said it was sometimes necessary to “have the pain
before the pleasure.” He went on: “We may
have schools in the wrong place when it comes to deal ing with population growth. Developers get permission for housing and we have then to take on the educa tional issues. They want to develop virgin land and we as the education authority have to face up to the prob lems. “I think these people are
going into a cul-de-sac and asking us to come up with a solution through the fast- track mechanism.”
