Eyes down as new books fill shelves

AVID readers at Clith- eroe's five primary schools are putting their noses into some new books - thanks to Soroptimists International of Clitheroe. The club has bought

books for each of the- schools as part of ongoing charity work at home and abroad. There was a special pre

sentation at Clitheroe Mayoris Parlour, when young school ambassadors received the books from the Mayor and Mayoress, Coun. and Mrs Alan Year- ing. Also present was the local

Soroptimists' president, Mrs Barbara Shaw, and

| other members. The Sorop timists had given each of the schools £100 to spend on books of their choice. Our picture shows the

pupils with the Mayor and Mayoress and Soroptimists at the oresentation. ‘(040400/4/17)

School places row; MP calls for a new secondary school to be built

AS the row over school places continues in the Ribble Valley, local MP Mr Nigel Evans is calling for a new secondary

school for the borough. He describes it as the "ultimate solution" in an area where too many

youngsters chase too few places. In asatement to the Advertiser and

Times, he examines the need for extra school places as housing development continues and puts forward options

for solving the shortfall. And he calls on Ribble Valley Bor

ough Council and Lancashire County Council to "look at the future demand for school places now and make provi sion for this demand at the appropri

ate time.” His full statement is as follows:

"The school places row continues unabated. It is simply an issue of too many youngster chasing too few places. The remedy is simple. The choices are: 9 Reduce the number of children. 9 Provide more school places. O Bus more youngsters to neigh

bouring schools. "Busing youngsters is totally unac

ceptable and runs counter to Govern ment policy on transport. Many peo ple live in the Ribble Valley because of

the beauty of the area and the excel lence of the schools. Many parents face their children being bused to less popular neighbouring schools even though they have lived in the area for

years. "The second option of providing

extra places is common sense, but only if the extra places are not detri mental to the good education of the youngsters currently at the school. Glynne Ward, as headteacher of Rib- blesdale School, has done a tremen dous job of turning that school around. It is offering high levels of education, especially in the field of technology. There has to be an opti mum size for the school, and you can not simply keep bulging the numbers, attending the school, without damag ing the integrity of the education offered. "One solution is to provide an extra

school. I visited Bowland High School last week, and I was impressed with the enthusiasm of the new headmas ter, Maurice Graham. They will be building extra classrooms on site this summer, but this will still fall short of the extra places needed to accommo date local youngsters. "The ultimate solution is to provide

a new school. The extra demand for school places is coming from the

Whalley-Brockhall end of the area New houses have and will be built on the sites of the former mental institu tions. Extra housing has already been built in the Mellor, Billington, Barrow and Clitheroe areas over the past few years. Extra houses bring with them extra demand for school places. Rib ble Valley and Lancashire Councils must look at the future demand for school places now - and make provi sion for this demand at the appropri ate time. "One of the more attractive solu

tions is to limit extra demand by lim iting the house building. I know peo ple want to live in the Ribble Valley, but if we continue to build at the rate we have been building over the past 10 years then this jewel in the crown of the UK will be tarnished forever. Limit the new houses and the school places will look after themselves. "The Government has provided

new guidelines to local authorities on new house building which allows them to look at, among other things, school provision. Let's use these new guide lines to protect our green fields and ensure that our youngsters get the good education they deserve - in Rib ble Valley schools."

April 20th, 2000 21 Sunny Dales trip for

local ramblers’ group THIRTEEN members of Clitheroe Ramblers' Club enjoyed a walk in the Yorkshire Dales on Sun day led by Mr Dan Brad

bury. Bright sunshine accom

panied the group as it set off from Embsay and then climbed up over Rylstone Fell, passing Rylstone Cross and over to Cracoe War Memorial. The area showed much evidence of mining from many years ago and is now used for grouse shooting.

The walk continued over

Burnsall and Thorpe Fell, stopping at a shooting lodge for a lunch break. Afterwards, it made its way to Upper Barden Reservoir and then to Eastby Gate and back to Embsay. The next walk will be on

Saturday, April 22nd, when Mr Bob Frost will lead the group over Bleasdale and Langden Castle from Chip ping. Anyone needing more information should contact Mr Frost, tel. 01200 440711.

Village car park: we have the cash, but not the site!

ALTHOUGH there is £30,000 available towards a car park in Waddington, there is still nowhere to spend it. Tonight’s meeting of the

Ribble Valley Borough Council Planning and Development Committee is being recommended to make further efforts to find a site. The parish council wants

improvements to be made to the recreation ground car

park, but council officials feel there would be too many problems, says their report for the meeting. The trust deed may rule

out such a use, and the number of signs required, plus parking restrictions to protect local residents, could prove unacceptable. In any case, the village problem may not be solved by using the recreation ground.
