YOUfR ESSENTIAL GUIDE TO THE LO^All MOTORING MARKET

Leon out to prove it Is king of the jungle S

By ADRIAN TAYLOR

EAT is at last ready to take on the giants of the supermini sector - and they had better be ready.

The VW-owned Spanish manufacturer is

and match. The result is almost bewildering, with

three different styles - Freeway, Ele gance and Sport - and numerous varia tions of engines and specifications. Each collection has its own target

market. First-time or second-car buyers are expected to opt for the Freeway; Elegance is designed to appeal to those wanting a smaller car, but with added luxuries; while the Sport speaks for itself, with power from 75 b.h.p. to the 172 b.h.p. of the Renaultsport. Engine choices vary from the 1.2, 60

b.h.p. of the entry level Liberte to the 1.9. 80 b.h.p. dTi. Add 10 different trim levels and vary

ing equipment and there are 16 differ ent models. While Renault have decided to

change Nicole and Papa for Helene and a Size May or May Not Matter series of ads, visually the 2000 Clio Collection remains unchanged. Under the bonnet there are some new

offerings, including a 1.4, 16v 98 b.h.p. petrol engine and Renault’s new diesel, the 1.9dTi. The 1.4 is available in the Elegance and the diesel in the Sport range.

Extra choice on the Clio T

HE new Clio range from Renault is all about choice, inviting you to mix

about to rain on the Focus and Astra parade in torrents with its nine-model Leon range. Sales began last week, with prices stretching from £11,000 to £18,000. Leon, built on the same platform as the VW

The 1.4 16v reflects the Renault phi

losophy of more for less. In the comfort able Etoile, which replaces the RXE, it is more than adequate for the motorway, while its size and responsive steering makes it is as easy to handle along twisty country lanes as on a dual car riageway. This mid-range model of the Elegance

collection is three or five-door, with CD player, electric tilt/slide sunroof, electric heated mirrors, alarm and immobiliser. Head and leg room are more than

adequate and the boot is surprisingly spacious. The Etoile starts at £11,050 and slots in between the £10,150 Alize and the leather-trimmed, top-specifica tion Initiale at £13,750. The new 80 b.h.p. 1.9 diesel offers

direct-injection turbo power and 109 m.p.h. but the price to be paid for aver age fuel consumption of almost 55 m.p.g. and reduced C02 emissions is more noise and a less ready response than on petrol. Initially the dTi will only be available

in the Sport Si range, which has dual airbags, power steering, alloy wheels, sports pack, seats and dials, plus remote central locking. Sport prices from £8,695 with the dTi at £11,395 for the three-door.

Golf, slots into the SEAT line-up between the Ibiza and Toledo, both of which have been replaced lately to complete a hat-trick of excep- tionally-youthful models. It is a five-door hatchback which looks less

chunky than the Astra, less new-age than Focus and prettier and sleeker than either of them. It has a distinctive flowing appearance that culmi nates in a strong rear end. There is no wasted metal, no attempt to go for outrageous curves to attract attention. The boot is deep, wide, flat and fulsome, and

the cabin is neat and mature, with a dashboard lifted straight from the bigger, more expensive

Toledo. If you remember tacky, shiny plastic, poorly

constructed SEAT interiors of a few years ago, wipe the memory blank. This cockpit has plenty of black plastic on show, but it looks and feels high quality. The seats, gloriously long in the leg, are firm and supportive, and the dials, switches and controls are just as you would expect to find in any cars from the Volkswagen empire. The high-class ambience of the interior is

helped by a healthy helping of head, shoulder and leg room and by touches like three over-the- shoulder seat belts and three headrests in the

back. The model SEAT expects to make a big

impact is the £16,000 20V T Sport, which has a six-speed gearbox, electronic air conditioning and a 180 b.h.p. 1.8 litre engine which SEAT delights in telling us is the most powerful produc tion engine it has made. I t has the most power you can lay your hands on for the money - and that includes the stunning new Renault Clio

Sport 172. For all that the 20V T Sport is much more

than a typical hot hatch. It has an easy respon siveness and is commendably quiet, even when it is taking a thrashing. Pedals are light, gear movements slick and quick and acceleration can be exciting in any gear. It is not a car that demands to be indulged.

For a start the suspension is pliant and suited to everyday driving, so there is none of the jerky, juddery, fcel-every-ripple firmness of some fast hatchbacks. It is happy in traffic, obedient and subdued a t low speeds and unruffled at all times. I t is poised and refined, yet when you want it

to flex its muscles it does so instantly. It can sprint to 60 m.p.h. in 7.7 seconds and hit a top speed of 142 m.p.h. There will be a Cupra version, for £18,000

with full leather, electronic stability programme and more bells and whistles, but I reckon the T Sport is a more realistic flagship and temptingly good value. There are six engines; a 1.4 that itself is no

slouch with 75 b.h.p. to call on, a 1.6 100 b.h.p., a 1.8 20v normally aspirated that generates 125 b.h.p. and the 20v turbo and two 1.9 litre turbo diesels, one generating 90 b.h.p., the other 110 b.h.p. With four trim levels - S, SE, Sport and

Cupra - Leon offers plenty of choice and good levels of equipment for the money. All feature anti-lock brakes with electronic brakeforce distri bution, remote central locking, adjustable steer ing wheel, external temperature gauge, four airbags and power steering. The Sport adds four electric windows, elec

tronic climate control air conditioning, traction control and 16in. alloys, as well as twin chrome exhausts to underline its sporty nature. Leon represents a huge challenge in a keenly

fought sector and I am sure that it will not leave its close cousin, VW’s Golf, unscathed as it rips into the opposition. Its attractions are completed by a 12-year

bodywork warranty and three year unlimited mileage guarantee.
