BBC1 IMAGINE: The Blair Witch Project
THE BLAIR WITCH PROJECT (Cert 15, 77 mins) Thriller. Heather Donahue, Michael Williams, Joshua Leonard. LET'S get one thing straight from the beginning: The Blair Witch Project is not the scariest film ever made. Not by a long stretch of the imag- ination. However, it is a deeply affecting and chilling exercise in viewer manipula tion, feeding the audience's fear and paranoia and letting overactive imaginations do all the hard work. RENT IT IF... you quiver for a haunted house film which actually delivers on its promise to chill the blood. Rating ★ ★ ★ *
RUNAWAY BRIDE (Cert PG,'111 mins) Romance. Julia Roberts, Richard Gere, Joan Cusack, Hector Elizondo, Rita Wil son. THIS dream team reunion of Julia Roberts and Richard Gere, and director Garry Marshall, fails to recapture the romanticism or charm of Pretty Woman. At the film's centre are two unappealing characters who woo one another with greetings card platitudes and share no dis cernible sexual chemistry. RENT IT IF... Erin Brock- ovich is sold out at the cine ma, your copy of Pretty Woman is worn out, and you

THE WINSLOW BOY (Cert U, 110 mins) Drama. Nigel Hawthorne, Jeremy Northam, Rebecca Pidgeon, Gemma Jones, Guy Edwards, Matthew Pidgeon. THE FILM centres on navy cadet Ronnie Winslow (Guy Edwards) who explodes into the public consciousness when he is expelled from his academy for allegedly steal ing a postal order. The boy protests his innocence, despite a wealth of evidence which seems to point to his guilt. RENT IT IF... you fear the press's part in deciding the guilt or innocence of court cases was as strong 50 years
ago as it is today. Rating ★

What is your favourite part of the
film? I like the whole thing and if I had it on video, it would be watched regularly. I par ticularly like the scene in the cafe.

Small Soldiers, Sky Premier, 8pm Saturday evenings on satellite are usually packed with well-known movies and top-class premieres. In recent weeks we’ve enjoyed the likes of Out of Sight, The Truman
Show, Primary Colours and There’s Something About Mary. But it looks as if schedule planners have run out of steam a little. This live action and computer-generated animated feature had been expected to clean up at the box office in the same way as Toy Story had done a couple of years before, but failed to inspire the same enthusiasm from both critics and punters. A computer chip has a bizarre effect on a squad of toy soldiers, leading to mayhem for their youthful owner as the miniature marauders engage in a series of skirmishes.
