Question mark now over car park in long-running Whalley saga

Looks unlikely councillors can come up with a site by Nata lie Cox

WHALLEY’S long-running car park saga could come to an end tonight without any solution. Members of Ribble Valley

Borough Council's Planning and Development Committee are being asked to decide whether the search for a car park should continue. A report from council .officials says that all options to find a site appear to have been exhausted. Last month, Whalley Parish

Council put forward a package of measures aimed at solving the vil lage's parking crisis. The three- point strategy suggested that restricted parking should be intro duced in King Street, together with the provision of parking spaces at Vale House Gardens and on part of Green Park, but parish representatives also made it clear that they were not prepared to look at the Vale House Gardens site as a whole. Tonight, borough councillors will

consider a report which says that the parish's resolution fails on all three counts. The report adds that if there is no change of mind by the village council about the terms

under which they would consent to the Vale Garden site being convert ed into a car park big enough to meet the village's need, and if the owner of land on Accrington Road cannot be encouraged to reconsider selling a suitable plot, then there appears to be no realistic prospect of providing a car park in Whalley. it adds that.other suggested sites

• At a meeting of Whalley

Parish Council, concerns were raised about the report going before committee tonight. Parish council lors agreed that they would send a representative to read a prepared statement at tonight's meeting and that they would write to all mem bers of the Planning Committee. During a lengthy debate about

are either not big enough, not avail able or in the wrong place. "All options therefore appear to be exhausted," says the report. It con cludes by saying that Whitbreads have hinted that the pay-and-dis- play Whalley Arms car park could revert to customer-only parking if no public space is provided soon.

parking, suggestions were made that the QBII playing fields could be considered as an alternative site, and chairman Coun. Eric Ronnan expressed concern about sugges tions from the borough council which he said seemed to indicate that it should not actively pursue any other course of action.

BIRTHDAY ■ g r e e t in g s ;

NUTTALL (Jayne)

GLASSES were raised and much merriment made at Clitheroe Lions Club's 17th charter dinner at Stirk House Hotel, Gisburn, on Friday. Around 55 guests wined

and dined the night away at the hotel while reflecting on yet another successful money-raising year,, which saw many local charities benefit from their efforts. The club works closely

with other organisations in the town, such as Clitheroe Round Table, the Rotary clubs and Rotaract, and contributes greatly towards main attractions in the town's calendar. Much- needed money is also raised for other deserving bodies, such as East Lancashire Hospice and visiting groups of children from Chernobyl. Toastmaster was Lions

member Mr Tony Smith; grace was said by Mr Barry Barnes; Objects of Lion International read by Mr

Roger Williams; reading of the charter by Mr David Moore; the loyal toast pro posed by Mr Peter Howarth; toast to Lions Clubs International pro posed by president Mr Allen Hollingworth; our ladies and guests from Mr Ian Joyce; response on behalf of our ladies and guests from His Hon. Richard Pickering and the final toast by club president Mr Hollingworth. Our picture shows top

THE tiny tots of Pendle Pre-school Play group paraded some 30 colourful creations for their annual Easter bonnet competi

tions. Mothers who had helped to make the

hats watched as the young models took part in a grand parade, held at Clitheroe Cricket Club at an and end-of-term party. Winner James Sharpies was presented

with a large chocolate egg. Runner-up was Shannon Gleave and third was Charlotte Arrowsmith-Jones, who also received

prizes. "There were some excellent bonnets,"

said Mrs Sephanie Zak, chairman of the playgroup committee. “All the children had

a hand in making the bonnets and we rewarded them by giving them all an East

er egg." Mrs Angela McCotter, the group's fund

raising co-ordinator, added; "The standard of bonnets was probably the highest ever paraded by our children." Judge was Clitheroe library assistant

Mrs Christine Woodworth. Our picture shows some of the contes

tants with their creations, including (front row, extreme right) James Sharpies, of Chaigley, who helped to make the bonnet which caught the judge's eye and won the contest. (160400/3/12)

Death crash teenager is improving in hospital

CLITHEROE teenager Christopher Dixon, who was injured in a serious road traffic accident which claimed the life of his friend, is'improving in hos pital.

The 16-year-old stu

dent, of Park Avenue, is still in-Blackburn Royal Infirmary, but he has been moved out of the intensive care unit on to a ward. This week his condition was described as "satisfac tory". Thomas Hetherington-

Fogg (17), of Hob Green, Mellor, was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident, which happened in Whalley Road, Pendle ton, around 9-30 p.m. on Saturday, April 8th.

Both teenagers were for-

mer pupils of Ribblesdale Technology College High School in Clitheroe and were both studying at Blackburn College, Thomas attending as a day release student from Whalley Motor Services, where he was working as a trainee technician. Inquiries into the acci

dent are continuing and on Saturday night investigat ing officers were back at the scene carrying out a witness check. Sgt Nigel Walker,

the officer leading the inquiry, said people in more than 800 vehicles had been asked about the accident. He added that, as a result of information received, one person had been arrested and interviewed, but released from custody. Sgt Walker went on to

say that two other people, who had been released on police bail last week, had been interviewed further and again released on police bail pending further investi gation.-

Steeple mast plan scrapped

• •'.... ApriJ'23rd, 2000. - With all our love from Mum, Dad, Marie-Louise, John-Paul and Scampi.

, Happy Birthday,

there are no conclusive health risks and the tower is, in any case, a consider able distance from residen tial properties. It is needed for a new police scheme, but the facilities could be shared, cutting the overall number of masts.

PLANS to put a mobile phone mast inside a Ribble Valley church steeple

have been dropped. , More than 300 people, who attended a

meeting in Mellor Village Hall on Thurs day night, were told that the Vicar of St Mary's CE Church had decided to put the

plan aside rather than divide the village. However, parishioners were warned by

the Rev. Peter Hudson, that they would have to find money to repair and maintain the church which would have come from the installation of the mast. Mr Hudson has now-called a meeting of the PCC and hopes that his decision will be accepted.

Valley is tops as hospice fund-raiser

of coffee mornings, in aid of the East Lancashire Hos

THE Ribble Valley topped the fund-raising when sever al areas took part in a week

pice fund. Blackburn raised £1,000,

Darwen £500 and Ribble Valley, £1,100. In the local area, the

biggest efforts came from the WIs and villages. Mrs Edna Clarkson,

joint chairman of the fund's Ribble Valley Appeal, said: "They gave us tremendous support, more so than Clitheroe itself, but I feel we should try it again next year, when we can, perhaps, rectify that." Future fund-raising

events for the hospice are a golf competition at Mytton Fold Country Hotel on May 10th and a "Musical Miscellany" concert at the Centenaries Theatre, Stonyhurst, on May 25th. The concert - with the

the accent on youth - fea tures the singing group, "Impact" and instrumental ist Miss Gaynor Sutcliffe and friends from the Royal Northern School of Music. The concert starts as 7-30

p.m. and tickets (£5.50, including refreshment, and £4.50 for under-16s) can be obtained from the Tourist Information Centre in Clitheroe or by telephoning the theatre.
