Northern Africa, South Africa, Bangladesh, Ireland, Germany, Japan and in new provinces in Canada; Alberta, Ontario, Saskatchewan, and British Columbia. One of the most notable and unique deals to date is a master franchise agreement in Japan (with right of first refusal on other Asian countries). The first location is scheduled to open in Tokyo in early 2022, and the plan is to open 60 Wayback Burgers locations in Asia over the next 20 years.
What makes this partnership unique
is that it’s also a partnership with Next Meats, a Tokyo-based company that develops plant-based alternative proteins. The brand will develop exclusive plant- based products for Wayback Burgers. For instance, Wayback Burgers recently conducted a vegan showcase with the Next Meats team in Sacramento where they debuted a plant-based short rib sandwich with Kimchi that immediately sold out. The US stores currently have the Impossible Burger on the menu, but Conlin said they are open to potentially bringing anything that does well with Next Meats in Asia in as an LTO, as they always have an eye on the future.
Ahead of the game
If the pandemic taught us anything, it was that being nimble will be key moving forward. For Conlin the key is to embrace an attitude that reflects on the future: “What will be the next challenge to get over and what can you do now to get ahead of the curve?” he says. So, everything is on the table when it comes to exploring new technology. Especially as growth begins to soar – Wayback has already awarded 16 franchise agreements this year and is working with current franchisees to expand. It is betting big on more ways to order quickly whether it be kiosks in stores, AI text ordering or automated phone systems. Conlin knows for certain delivery is

Giving back with Boys and Girls Club partnership In 2018, Wayback Burgers formed a partnership with the Boys and Girls club of America, a national organization that supports youth with the resources they need to reach their full potential. It provides a safe haven for those from a difficult background.
“Their mandate to keep kids out of trouble from time they get out of school until dinner time really resonated with us,” says Conlin.
It is also a nice pipeline for teenagers to work in their restaurants. The partnership has been very fruitful. Each year on National Giving Day in the US they give 10% of sales to the organization, as well as giving back a portion of sales throughout the year.
For the past few years they have held a shake creation contest where kids at the clubs can create a limited-time shake. The winning club is awarded a $10,000 prize. A past winner was a Caramel Cinnamon Toast Crunch Milkshake that did really well.
To date, Wayback Burgers has raised over $600,000 for the organization.
are currently more difficult to deliver. Food lockers where customers can scan a QR code to open and pick up their order is one concept currently being considered. Automation is huge. “We used to laugh about robots flipping burgers,” says Conlin, “But with labor shortages we need to find ways to cut back on staff.” If the last couple of years have taught
him anything, he says, it is to, “embrace any new technology even if it will change over the next six months,” he says. “It will keep you ahead of the game.”
