he next few years could be important for the world of medical devices. The implementation date of the EU’s MDR and IVDR frameworks are just around the corner. Meanwhile, the UK is looking to establish an independent regulatory system it can put in place as it stops accepting CE-marked devices in 2023. Across the pond, the US is looking to establish new protocols that draw on the lessons learned by the FDA from the use of its EUA programme during the pandemic. We get some insight into what those might look like straight from the
horse’s mouth – the horse being FDA director of the Center for Devices and Radiological Health Dr Jeffrey Shuren – on page 23. One of the key technologies given an EUA during the pandemic have been Covid-19 diagnostics, some of which operate as portable point-of-care systems. What may not be apparent to some is the role that photonics technology plays within these tests, so we roped in biophysicist and European Photonics Industry Consortium project manager Dr Elena Beletkaia to shed some light on the topic on page 71. We’re never in short supply of complex science to grapple with in this publication, but the benefits of many breakthrough discoveries are rarely felt in developing countries because they carry such a high cost. A key example here is the field of microfluidics, the findings within which have been a boon for developing IVDs. A device created at the University of Bristol in the UK could pave the way to democratising that science, however, which we explore how on page 94. Other topics explored in this issue include 3D-printed organs, injectable chips that measure vital signs and automation in manufacturing. We’re still hoping for an end to the pandemic, but it’s comforting to know the industry is still turning the wheels of progress through it.
