Company insight Events in focus

The medical technology industry and its suppliers are looking forward to heading to two of the world’s leading conferences in the space: MEDICA and COMPAMED. The 2021 iterations of each show will be jointly held at the Düsseldorf Trade Fair Centre from 15 to 18 November 2021. The return to in-person attendance comes after the pandemic restrictions forced the organisers to hold the 2020 shows virtually.

T

he coronavirus pandemic has pushed the healthcare sector firmly into the spotlight and, in doing so, has revealed the weaknesses within care systems. Hospitals, outpatient service providers and care institutions have an increased need for medical and laboratory technology, a wide variety of medical products and personal protective equipment, and in particular new digital healthcare solutions or point-of-care telemedical applications. The exhibitors at MEDICA and COMPAMED 2021 will present many innovations focused on these themes, and the specialist forums and accompanying conferences on these will amplify the expert dialogue and transfer of knowledge, the content of both of which will be perfectly tailored to the needs of the important target groups in the healthcare industry.

Moving halls

It was originally planned that COMPAMED would be held in halls 8a and 8b of the Düsseldorf Trade Fair Centre, but the event will now be found in halls 13 and 14. By moving the event to new halls, Messe Düsseldorf is meeting the wishes of the federal state government of North Rhine-Westphalia, namely to ensure that they can continue to use the north area of the trade fair centre for activities in conjunction with vaccine logistics and infrastructure for this federal state. “All of the experts are in unanimous agreement: The fight against the pandemic will continue to require a huge national joint effort for quite a while,” says Erhard Wienkamp, managing director of Messe Düsseldorf. “We need to demonstrate patience, stamina and have the flexibility to keep reacting to challenges quickly and

“We need to demonstrate patience, stamina and have the flexibility to keep reacting to challenges quickly and appropriately. It is crucial that the vaccination campaign continues to progress without a hitch here.”

The theme segments of MEDICA are oriented towards the complete needs of outpatient and inpatient care. They are: Lab technology and diagnostics, electrotherapy and medical technology, disposables and consumables, information and communication technology (digital health), and physiotherapy and orthopaedic technology. COMPAMED, on the other hand, will showcase the entire range of products and services the supplier market provides for medical technology: from individual components and parts to high-tech solutions, innovative materials and packaging, to complete contract manufacturing.

appropriately. It is crucial that the vaccination campaign continues to progress without a hitch here.” The setup is almost identical to the original stand plan for halls 8a and 8b for the COMPAMED exhibitors, and Christian Grosser, director of health & medical technologies for Messe Düsseldorf, says the exhibitors may even be “pleasantly surprised” by the reallocation, which puts them in close proximity to the MEDICA- themed segment for electrotherapy and medical technology, along with the captivating stage programmes from many specialist forums relating to medical technology and even IT.

Innovation in the pandemic The coronavirus pandemic has had a significant impact on every aspect of people’s lives. Almost every single person has been affected in some way – be it their health, their profession or their entire life. But there are also some rays of hope worth mentioning. Among them are the rapid development of vaccines, testing kits and, in the future, medications, all of which have contributed considerably to managing the crisis. Microfluidic components are particularly well-suited to significantly accelerate the pace of development, something that is impressively demonstrated at The COMPAMED HIGH- TECH FORUM by IVAM (the International Microtechnology Business Network). Microfluidic components allow them to quickly conduct a multitude of experiments using what is known as a high-throughput screening method. This enables users to realise a large number of tests over extremely short periods of time, for example, to test the effectiveness of medications or vaccines on living cells. The speed and accuracy of the tests is achieved through microstructures, which gives researchers far better control over physical and chemical parameters (for example, temperature, pressure, response times). These tiny structures have an additional benefit, as they require a lower number of samples and ensure the economic use of reagents. In the past months, new products and medications have been developed over a very short period of time, something that would not have been possible without microfluidic elements. Devices and components such as lab-on-a-chip and mobile diagnostic devices and chemical microreactors already play an active part in the battle against the pandemic.

Optimisation potential

In general, microfluidic platforms are well- suited to swiftly develop and commercialise
