xperts increasingly agree that supplements can dramatically boost the body. In the US, for instance, the NIH now argues that vitamins and oils are crucial both for regular health – and for fighting a range of diseases. This enthusiasm is reflected elsewhere too. According to work by Grand View Research, the global dietary supplements market is currently worth $177bn, with CAGR expected to hover around the 9% mark through 2030. That’s shadowed on the national level too: some 16 million Brits now consume some kind of supplement, even as their continental cousins are moving in the same direction.

Everybody’s different E

Given all this movement, at any rate, this edition of Ingredients Insight unsurprisingly explores supplements in depth. A good example is our deep-dive on astaxanthin, where a pair of University of Hawaii experts consider how the carotenoid, found in fish and yeast, could help everywhere from Alzheimer's to celiac disease. That’s shadowed by our story on Vitamin K2. It may not be as famous as Vitamin D, but as Abi Millar finds out, it’s especially important for bone health. Yet if supplements are becoming a staple across the ingredients sector, and could yet transform the lives of millions for the better, it’d be wrong to imagine them as a panacea. On the contrary, much of our coverage this issue emphasises that the body is far too complex for that – and instead requires supplements to be dovetailed by a range of other healthy choices. That’s clear, for example, in Phoebe Galbraith’s story on the microbiome. As she discovers, the gut can certainly be protected by supplements, but the advantages of a healthy diet can’t be discounted either. In a sense, this comprehensive approach extends right across the magazine. From sustainable olive oil, to non-alcoholic beer, to the contentious rise of artificial meat, we consider this vibrant sector holistically. The body, after all, is far too complicated for singular solutions.
