The astaxanthin from indoor-cultivated microalgae is also typically of higher purity and free from potential contaminants. The highly-valued product has versatile applications beyond human dietary supplements and food, including cosmetics and personal care, and animal nutrition. With the advancements of technology, it is easier to address the organoleptic concerns related to taste, aroma or


odour of algae-based products. For instance, astaxanthin can be combined with natural flavours, or other ingredients to mask any potential off-taste. It can also be encapsulated or formulated into various delivery systems, such as liposomes, emulsions, or microcapsules, which can mask any residual taste while enhancing bioavailability and stability. If necessary, astaxanthin-based formulas can be mixed with other nutrients or blended with other ingredients to achieve a more balanced nutritional profile tailored to specific applications or target populations. By addressing the possible concerns through a combination of technical solutions, and education, manufacturers and marketers of microalgae-based products can build consumer confidence and facilitate broader acceptance of these valuable, natural and environmental-friendly products.
