STRENGTHENING QUEENS Capital Improvements Bring Meaningful

Change on Campus Over the past few months, crews have made their way into residence halls and onto rooſtops to renovate and revitalize Queens' historic buildings in the first stage of a multi-year effort to enhance the campus experience. “This campus renovation will improve our ability to

deliver an extraordinary experience to the entire Queens community,” said Maria del Carmen Flores, vice president of student engagement and dean of students. “We are excited for students to return in the fall and to enjoy these newly renovated spaces.” The roofs of McEwen, Morrison, Hayes and Watkins are

in the process of being replaced with durable and sustainable “green” materials that provide superior weatherproofing while ensuring improved energy efficiency. Barnhardt Residence Hall is undergoing a renovation that includes a newly designed lobby, kitchen and gender-

inclusive bathrooms. These new bathrooms will offer a secure, private space with their own showers, sinks and toilets. Floors and fresh paint will also round out Barnhardt’s makeover. Hayes, Albright, and Wireman Residence Halls are also being updated with floor repairs and fresh paint. “The updates to our residence halls allow for a more

student-centric experience,” said Leigh Hicks, director of capital projects. “They encourage student socialization and engagement and foster an environment of inclusivity for all.” Modernization of water heating systems is also

underway. New gas pipes are in the process of being installed so that campus buildings will no longer be dependent on steam for domestic hot water and heat. This includes water used for washing hands and taking showers. In addition, all water heaters have been replaced in all residence halls.
