Queens Mourns Loss of Two
Students Lives of Jessie Morales and Isabella Jones are fondly remembered
A nursing major and men's rugby player at Queens, Jessie Martin Morales Carrillo '24 passed away on Jan. 8. The 20-year-old was described as confident and charismatic with unwavering integrity. Queens held a memorial service on Feb. 22 — what would have been Jessie's 21st birthday — on campus at Belk Chapel. In addition to the service, a commemorative Star Magnolia tree was planted on campus in Jessie's memory.
The passing of Isabella (Izzy) Jones was announced by President Lugo on May 23. The 21-year-old was a graphic design student set to graduate in 2024. She was a resident assistant in Albright Hall,
a student librarian in Everet Library, an Honors student and a Davies Fellow. She was also an active participant in Interfaith Leadership Council and Phi Mu. The Queens community was invited by the Jones family to a celebration of life ceremony for Izzy on June 10.

Queens Remembers

Queens University of Charlote is mourning the loss of Edward "Ed" J. Brown III, a renowned business executive and philanthropist with deep ties to the university. Brown passed away on April 3 at the age of 74. Brown was the husband of Trustee Emerita Jan Hall Brown ’73,
MBA ’84. The couple generously invested in student and residential life, paving the way for similar donations that have significantly enhanced the undergraduate student experience at Queens. In 2019, the couple were awarded the Algernon Sydney Sullivan Award, Queens’ highest community recognition, in honor of their excellence of character and humanitarian service. Among their philanthropic investments, the couple supported
Queens through a generous donation to renovate the student residence that was eventually named Hall Brown Overcash Residence Hall. Their generosity also created the Hall Brown Terrace, and their endowed scholarship established in memory of Jan’s late parents, Hope and Pat Hall, has made a Queens education possible for numerous students. “Our hearts are heavy as we mourn the loss of this incredibly
generous man whose impact will forever be embedded in Queens’ history,” said Dan Lugo, Queens University president. “Our thoughts go out to Jan and the Brown family, and we want them to know their Queens family joins them in celebrating Ed’s many incredible accomplishments and supports them during this time of mourning.”
