HACKNEY DRIVER HEROES!

NOTTINGHAM CITY TAXI DRIVERS CONGRATULATED BY MPS FOR GIVING FREE JOURNEYS TO NHS HOSPITAL WORKERS

Asif Maqsood, spokesperson for the Nottingham Licensed Taxi Association, and a taxi driver for 16 years, said:

“We have been operating this free service for NHS hospital workers for thirty nine days now. At a time of crisis, you know that the drivers of Licensed Hackney Carriages in Nottingham are willing to go the extra mile to help others. The NHS hospital workers are literally putting their lives at risk for us so this is the least we can do. The idea was brought to the attention of the Association Committee, and then quickly put it into operation. We are very pleased that our City MP’s and Leader of Nottingham City Council are supporting us in this cause.”

Nottingham North MP Alex Norris said:

“Our NHS staff are doing an incredible job of keeping us safe and well in difficult circum- stances. Current lockdown rules have hit hard but still Nottingham Licensed Taxi Association taxi drivers are stepping up for our NHS and the whole community. We’re lucky to have them.”

Nottingham East MP Nadia Whittome said:

“I’m amazed by the selflessness of Notting- ham Licensed Taxi Association drivers in Nottingham, putting NHS workers first when many are themselves struggling to keep a roof over their heads. I will continue pressing the government for mass-testing - at least for all frontline workers and includ- ing taxi drivers - and for sufficient and immediate financial support for self- employed people.”

Nottingham South MP Lilian Greenwood said:

“I know that the current lockdown is devas- tating for many self-employed workers, including our city’s taxi drivers. That’s why it’s incredible that, despite facing a huge cut in their income, Nottingham Licensed Taxi Association taxi drivers are offering free transport to and from work for NHS hospital workers. It’s a wonderful act of sol- idarity and generosity towards Nottingham’s health workers.”

Councillor David Mellen, Leader, Nottingham City Council said:

“Supporting our NHS as they care for very sick residents is vital at this time. I commend the Nottingham Licensed Taxi Association

Polly Reade, a director of Nottingham Busi- ness Improvement District (BID) com- mented:

Imran Hussain and Asif Maqsood, right, are helping our NHS hospital heroes

taxi drivers for their great work in transport- ing NHS staff for free at this time.”

John Peach, Operations Manager at Nottingham University Hospitals Trust, said:

“We are extremely grateful to the Notting- ham Licensed Taxi Association taxi drivers in our community who are supporting our staff by offering free rides to NHS staff to and from work. This is another great exam- ple of how people in Nottinghamshire are showing their generosity to us at this chal- lenging time.”

Wasim Amin, Chair of the Association, said:

“This is the time for us to get together and show our solidarity, to help and support NHS staff who are working day and night to keep us safe and healthy.”

“Nottingham Licensed Taxi Association drivers are giving NHS hospital workers free taxi journeys to and from taxi ranks and hos- pitals. This is self funded by taxi drivers ourselves. We are all self employed taxi drivers with our own taxis.”

Imran Hussain, a taxi driver for 24 years, who has been helping to organise the scheme, said:

“Thanks to all the taxi drivers who are par- ticipating. We have had a few more drivers come on board so well done to the existing drivers and the new ones. Don’t forget the free taxis for NHS hospital workers are designated with a sign in their windscreen. Please show the taxi driver your NHS iden- tification card to get your free taxi journey. NHS staff must have their ID cards to obtain this FREE TAXI SERVICE.

Robert Leszek Michalak, Chair of Notting- ham Elders Forum said:

“Thanking you all the Nottingham Licensed Taxi Association taxi drivers for making such a community spirited gesture in these diffi- cult times for all.”

Richard Buckwell from Nottingham and Notts Keep Our NHS Public:

“Applauds the offer of free lifts by Notting- ham hackney cab drivers, the Taxi Association, at the instigation of the black cab taxi drivers for NHS staff during this crisis”.

Alan Tuckman, Chair of Unite Community, Nottingham, said:

“The Nottingham Unite Community branch, a trade union campaigning in the community, applauds the action of our brothers in the Nottingham Licensed Taxi Association taxi drivers in their voluntary work ferrying supplies during this coron- avirus lock down.”
