SAFETY SCREENS

PROTECTION SCREEN Q&A Q. How much does it cost? A. £310 for any car; £400 for any MPV; £500 for any minibus. Price includes vat, fitting, and cleaning kit. The cost is reclaimable as a business expense.

Q. What is this screen made of? A. The screen is manufactured in plastic - no wood. The top clear part is made from 2mm polycarbonate; the lower black section (knee area) needs to be a softer material so is made from 3mm polyfoam board. Neither section impedes the space inside the vehicle.

Q. Can I fit the screen myself? A. No, it must be fitted at the garage in the Wirral. Fitting takes about an hour. Each screen is bespoke for each individual driver and make and model of vehicle to ensure a proper fit. Each screen is adjusted to each driver’s size, weight and height: For example if a driver is heavy, the seat moves back more with weight on it, so we make the screen slightly wider to allow for the movement on the back of the seat. Even height of seats affects screen shape. Some seats are high and some are low but only have one adjuster for height on the driver’s side - so to ensure the screen is level, packers are made to go under the pipe to hold the screen before clamping. You can even stagger the screen to a certain amount, meaning that when a seat moves forward or vice versa, it moves as your seat and the screen and the driver can adjust the height by lowering or raising the seat to get a tighter fit to the roof liner. This is why we cannot send the screen in the post to a customer.

Q. Will the installation damage my vehicle? A. No, there is no damage. The screen is secured by clamping the headrest by piping with 5 x 13mm bolts and 3 x 8mm nuts. These all unscrew, the only evidence of the screen is four screw holes in the lower seat plastic trim.

Q. Can you take it out of one vehicle and put it into another? A. Yes, but it can only be re installed in the SAME make and model of vehicle.

Q. Where is the hatch for passengers to pay the fare? A. The pay hatch is about halfway down the lower black section of the screen. You can also can have money trays installed that fit on top of the armrest.

Q. Can the screen easily be pulled down? A. No, It cannot be ‘pulled down’ easily.

Q. Does the screen obstruct the airbags? A. The screen has undergone a complete risk assessment, and amongst other important factors this has established that in the upper window section no deployment of the curtain airbag would be impeded as there is no structure past the centre of the seats. All airbags can deploy as per manufacturer’s integral safety systems.

Q. What happens if there is a collision which impacts the vehicle from the top or sides?

A. There is no change to the vehicle so a crash test is not required. However, the screen has been put through an FEA crash simula- tion. The clear plastic part of the screen will fold and the lower part will bend and crease as it is foam based.

MAY 2020

Q. What about the vehicle heaters and air conditioning? A. Once the screen is installed, drivers are advised not to recircu- late the air inside the vehicle. All vents can be utilised for fresh air outside.

Q. What happens when I no longer want the screen? A. Most drivers can remove the screen in less than five minutes. The only tools required are a Phillips screwdriver, and 8mm and 13mm sockets. It is probably wise to keep the screen as you never know when you may need it again; or the garage can dispose of it for £5.

SHAUN MARNELL, MD OF CAR ‘N’ CAB CARE STRESSES:

Q. Will my insurance company approve it? A. The screen is already approved by four main insurers: Equity Red Star, Antillo, Zego and Markerstudy. It should therefore not be an issue to be approved by other insurers. To be clear, all the insur- ers who have viewed and passed the screen state that it is no risk. There is no alteration to the vehicle as no part of the screen is screwed into any metal or body of the vehicle; So IT IS NOT a modification.

Q. Will my licensing authorities allow me to install it? A. The screen has already been approved by Liverpool City Council and many others. Realistically at present it may be difficult to get a quick approval from every council. However, we believe in these unprecedented times all drivers have the right to make their own risk assessment. Car ‘n’ Cab Care keeps a record of every vehicle area and insurance company. If we know it is not passed in an area we will inform the driver. We advise every driv- er in our terms and conditions to contact their own council for approval. We will take a vehicle to councils in our local areas or advise drivers to take their vehicle when their council reopens. We are expecting the majority of councils to approve the screen as every member of our trade is going to need to have some pro- tection if they want to work anytime in the near future. However, councils need to to understand the following points:

• The screen is not a modification. • The screen has been put through an FEA crash simulation. • The same screen design is used for all cars, MPV’s and minibuses – just larger upper and lower screens.

***Due diligence paperwork: We also can supply all drivers a due diligence information pack to give to your insurance company or council. This includes the screen’s FEA crash simulation report and risk assessment; build in- structions; materials utilised; diagrams showing no areas of the vehicles are affected by the screen.

***To ensure full protection drivers MUST adhere to the following: • A strict cleaning regime after every passenger leaves the vehicle: Cleaning of all hard surfaces, including the screen, seats and door handles, money flap – and the money itself.

• With every screen installation the garage supplies a cleaning kit which includes: a mask, gloves, a roll of paper, cleaning fluid and a spray bottle. We also supply screen stickers. These items must be replenished when they run out and can be sourced directly from Alliance - 01706 629978
