If ever there was a more appropriate time to adhere to one of the prime mantras of AA, this is it. To do otherwise - to try to predict the future as far as the next few days, never mind the rest of the year - is both futile and self-destructive.

As we produce this edition of PHTM, the Government is deliberating on the various ways to release the lockdown that has brought this country virtually to a standstill owing to the Covid-19 pandemic. The conflicting opinions, the speculation, the perceived delays… all those factors contribute to mounting public fear and frustration. Even if we disagree with what is eventually mapped out for us, at least a decision will have been taken and we can aspire to get back to “the new normal”… as the old normal is gone forever.

WORLDWIDE TAXI FOCUS 106-107

In respect of this industry, that “new normal” is equally unpre- dictable. One thing however we believe to be certain: it will take months and months for any kind of normality to return to our taxi and private hire businesses, mainly due to fear and lack of confidence on the part of the public. This is why we – the NPHTA and PHTM – have mounted a campaign in favour of the installa- tion of temporary protection screens in licensed saloon vehicles.

You will find in these pages a letter we have sent to every licensing authority throughout the UK, closely examining and discussing every aspect of this protection product, and why we are so very much in favour of its widespread use. Also inside is a closer look at one of these units, going into more technical detail about its construction and installation.

The entire message is clear: Protect Our Trade! Through the use of protection screens, PPE face masks, and thorough cleaning regimes not only personally but of every vehicle after every jour- ney, we are hopeful that more drivers are kept safe and well – and that their passengers have the confidence to know that every possible measure has been put in place for their safe transport.

We’ve also been busy surveying (again!): in this issue you’ll see two features setting out various licensing authorities’ lockdown procedures and policies, and the trade’s reaction to them. The first features individual drivers; the second has company proprietors reflecting on how the virus and resulting lockdown has affected their businesses. There is also a wonderful spread of stories about our trade’s heroes: the kind-hearted actions and activities undertaken by drivers and company owners coun- trywide. Check out the NPHTA pages as well… busy isn’t in it!

In the face of such adversity as is facing this industry, all we can do within these pages is to provide as much factual information as possible, and hopefully help to raise hope for a brighter, healthier future. Stay safe – stay well – and think about some aahhh-factor news that has come out of all this, such as the wonderful story of Captain Tom. Cheers, Sir!

Ray Butterworth

We were saddened to hear of the passing of Ray Butterworth last month, following a long illness. Ray was a very active and supportive member of the private hire trade in Nottingham for many years; the NPHA (as was) worked closely with Ray for a long time when he chaired the Nottingham Private Hire Association. The staff of PHTM and the NPHTA wish to pass on our condolences to Ray’s family, friends and colleagues.
