GLASGOW NHS TAXI FUND HELPS MORE THAN 400 HEALTH WORKERS

A fundraiser set up to provide free trav- el to health service workers in Glasgow has raised over £7,000 and helped provide 500 free journeys for NHS staff going to or from a city hospital. By mid April the Glasgow Taxi NHS Fund sat at £6,975 from which more than £5,500 has been reinvested, providing hundreds of NHS workers with a free Glasgow Taxi. The organisers behind the fund are encouraging more donations which can be made via www.gofundme.com

The fund is en- dorsed by Glasgow Taxis Ltd, who use donations to deliver all journeys at their highest discounted rate. Many drivers had previously pro- vided some journeys to NHS staff for no fee, ultimately incur- ring a loss due to petrol costs.

NEWHAM TAXI DRIVER OFFERS FREE LIFTS TO NHS STAFF AT NEWHAM HOSPITAL FOR MORNING AND EVENING SHIFTS

Michael Hayes, a taxi driver from Newham in east London, has been making a huge difference during this crisis by offer- ing up his services as a taxi driver to help members of NHS staff get home from their shifts on the frontline. He was asked why

he decided to give free cab rides to healthcare staff? “I’ve been a cab driver for 14 years and when the true extent of the pan- demic hit I really wanted to show my appreciation for NHS staff. All are welcome in my taxi at shift changes in

the morning and in the evening. I will continue to offer my services for as long as I can.” How are you keep- ing yourself safe? “I’ve taped all air gaps in my partition and blocked the hatch. I keep a mask for when I’m out of the cab speaking to

passengers at a safe distance and plenty of disinfectant. I give the inside of the cab a wipe over with antibacterial spray between every job and wash my hands frequently.” Michael has given lifts to dozens of members of NHS staff. Here’s what they had to say. Tolesa Buli, senior

radiographer at New- ham Hospital said: “Hearing Michael’s offer of a lift home made me realise that good people are all around us and we see them in times like this. He called me a hero and after a busy night shift, I honestly felt a few tears in my eyes.” Julie Ballesteros, Senior Critical Care

Nurse said: “Getting a free lift home from Michael was very uplifting. His kind- ness and generosity is massively appreci- ated by us. Taxi drivers are as need- ed as we are and equal heroes against the Covid-19 villain.” Micaela Giner Sim- on, A&E nurse was also grateful for Michael’s kind offer. She said: “I would like to say that this gentleman is abso- lutely amazing and kind, he was waiting for staff to finish at 7.30pm and when I finished at 7.30am he was there again! I couldn’t believe it. “He gives you a nice conversation which cheers us up after a long shift.”
