The owner of a taxi company has been fined after admitting employing an unli- censed driver. Debra Tingey, who runs 001 Cars in Hemsworth, plead- ed guilty to three charges at Leeds Magistrates’ Court last month. The Wakefield Ex- press reports that the firm, which also trades under the
name Tingey Cars, had employed 53 year-old Keith Walk- er as a driver, even though he did not have a PHV licence. Wakefield Council said Walker, from Hemsworth, was seen driving a PHV with passengers from Kinsley to South Kirkby. Tingey, also from Hemsworth, plead- ed guilty to oper-
ating a vehicle with an unlicensed driver, employing an unli- censed driver and allowing the use of an unlicensed vehi- cle when no in- surance was in force. She was fined £460, banned from driving for six months and ordered to pay costs. Walker pleaded guilty by post and was to be be sen- tenced later.
PAISLEY TAXI DRIVER BANNED AFTER REFUSING BREATH TEST
A Paisley taxi driver has been banned from the roads after repeatedly refusing to provide breath samples to police. According to the Daily Record, Mu- hammed Kaleem, 37, was at the wheel of his Skoda Octavia in the town’s Stoney Brae when he was pulled over by offi- cers who suspected he was drink driv- ing. Paisley Sheriff Court

PLYMOUTH DRIVER DROVE PASSENGERS WITH NO INSURANCE
A private hire driver in Plymouth who picked up and fer- ried passengers without any insur- ance has been disqualified from driving for
12
months and fined £500. DevonLive reports that Grzegorz Sli- wka, 39,
from
Plymouth was found guilty at Plymouth Magistrates’ Court to two charges of driving without in- surance over two periods, July 17 to August 23 and August 30 to Sep-
tember 17 last year. In total he made 581 journeys carrying fare paying passen- gers during periods when he did not have any vehicle insurance for his pri- vate hire vehicle. The case was bought following an investigation by the council’s taxi licens- ing team, which was awarded £1,000 towards its costs of the case. Sliwka was ordered to pay £500 in fines and a £32 victim charge. The council will now
review the status of his private hire driv- er licence at the next Taxi Licensing Committee hearing. Councillor Sally Hay- don, Cabinet Mem- ber for Customer Focus and Commu- nity Safety said: “Most of us would be really worried if we realised we were travelling in a car which was not insured, so it’s dou- bly shocking to learn that this was a professional li- censed driver who failed to have his vehicle insured.”
TAXI DRIVER FINED FOLLOWING CHELTENHAM’S RACING FESTIVAL
A Midlands taxi driv- er has been fined £1,000 for illegally cashing in on the Cheltenham Festi- val. According to Glou- cestershireLive, Wol- verhampton City Council-licensed So- hail Rehman was found guilty at Chel- tenham Magistrates’ Court of unlawfully plying for hire dur- ing the racing fes- tival in March 2019. The 22-year-old, from Birmingham, stopped his vehicle for Cheltenham Bor- ough Council en- forcement officers carrying out an undercover taxi op- eration during the busy racing event. Rehman attended an initial hearing at
the court, entering a not guilty plea to the charges of ply- ing for hire and having no insurance on Friday March 15 2019. On February 3 this year Rehman did not attend the trial and the matter was heard in his ab- sence. Following evidence given to the court by council officers, Rehman was found guilty of both charges and was fined £1,000 and received eight penalty points on his licence. He was also ordered to pay £1,963 court costs and a £100 victim surcharge. Wolverhampton City Council has been informed of the
prosecution. Cllr Andrew McKin- lay, cabinet member for development and safety, said: “So far Cheltenham Bor- ough Council has prosecuted nine drivers for illegally plying for hire dur- ing Cheltenham Festival in March 2019 and there are additional cases pending. We hope these prosecutions give a warning to drivers who wish to capitalise on the additional footfall to Cheltenham during Gold Cup week that we will take action should they operate unlawfully.” The council said its officers would con- tinue to carry out spot checks.
