TAXI DRIVER HELPS POLICE CATCH DRINK DRIVER WHO CRASHED INTO TRAFFIC LIGHTS IN NOTTINGHAM

A quick-thinking cabbie has been praised for helping to snare a drink-driv- er by giving a lift to a special constable. Whilst driving to- wards Nottingham city centre in the early hours of Dec- ember 21 last year, Rayhan Islam, 32, heard a loud bang. On the opposite side of the road, he saw that a car had crashed into a traffic light. After spotting two police officers - PC Matthew Bower and SC Amy Sutton - chase after the driver, Mr Islam spun his vehicle around, picked up SC Sutton and the pair fol-

lowed the suspect. SC Sutton, who directed Mr Islam, later got out of the taxi to arrest 21- year-old Brendon Cassidy, from Not- tingham. Praising Mr Islam, who works for Arrow Cars, SC Sut- ton said: “He made a huge difference. “We were on the first floor of the police station. It probably took us around 15-20 sec- onds to even get downstairs. And obviously we’d al- ready seen the suspect running off on foot and he’d actually gone out of our sight.

“So the fact that Mr Islam was so willing to help us and co- operate in that situation meant that we were actually able to prosecute him (Cassidy) for drink-driving.

“As it turns out the vehicle that the sus- pect crashed was registered to a com- pany. So by the time we’d made our enquiries and every- thing it’s highly unlikely that the

offender would have been prosecuted for drink-driving.” Mr Islam, from Not- tingham told Not- tinghamshire Live: “I feel great to help the officer on the particular (case). If similar things hap- pen in front of me or in front of my eyes I would always help.” Cassidy, from Not- tingham pleaded guilty at Nottingham Magistrates’ Court on Thursday, Jan- uary 30 to driving with excess alcohol and failing to stop after an accident. His breath test returned a reading of 80 micrograms of alcohol per 100

millilitres of breath – more than twice the legal drink-drive limit of 35mcg per 100 ml of breath. He also pleaded guilty to driving with excess alcohol on December 20, 2019. Cassidy was banned from driving for 30 months, to be re- duced by 228 days if he completes a course by 5 Septem- ber 2021. He was also given a 12-week prison sen- tence, suspended for two years, and was ordered to pay £200 compensa- tion, a £122 victim surcharge and £85 costs.
