UNDER GRIMSBY TAXI DRIVER’S BED


A taxi driver was caught with secret stashes of 73,820 cigarettes and 40kg of hand-rolling tob- acco worth more than £32,400. GrimsbyLive reports that he was selling the items, which had not had duty paid on them, to raise extra cash, a court heard. James Allison, 57, from Grimsby, ad- mitted fraudulently evading duty on May 21. Nadim Bashir, pros- ecuting, told Grim- sby Crown Court that police went to Allison’s home on a warrant. They found 30,000 cigarettes hidden in six large Pampers nappies boxes under a bed. Another 43,820 cig- arettes were found in a wardrobe as well

as 40.4kg of hand- rolling tobacco. There were some counterfeit ciga- rettes but others were genuine, al- though not for sale in this country. The excise duty evaded on the ciga- rettes was £22,921 and for the tobacco it was £9,503, mak- ing a total of £32,424. Allison told police: “I do sell a few cigarettes.” Allison was given an


eight-month sus- pended prison sentence, 120 hours’ unpaid work and was ordered to pay £535 costs. The cigarettes and tobacco will be for- feited. Recorder Paul Reid said: “All these cig- arettes will go up in smoke rather more quickly than antici- pated.” He added that it was an “absolutely stag- gering amount” of cigarettes.


TAXI DRIVER’S CAR SET ON FIRE OUTSIDE WALSALL HOME


A taxi driver says he fears for his family’s safety, after his car was set on fire out- side his home in Walsall. According to ITV News, CCTV cap- tured the moment a man poured petrol over the vehicle before setting it alight. Mohammed Bash- arat was at home with his family when the arson attack took place. A taxi driver was taunted with coron- avirus jibes before being headbutted in Exeter city centre. Police are appealing for information fol- lowing the assault which happened around 12.30am on Sunday 16 February near Augustus House on New North Road. The 35-year-old taxi driver, who is of Asian descent, re-


portedly picked up two female and two male passengers from the taxi rank outside John Lewis. Once in the taxi, one of the men proceed- ed to question the driver about where he was from and whether he had coronavirus. The male started to repeatedly slap the driver on the back of the head while he


was driving and when he stopped the car to let the passengers out the male started kicking him. The second male then headbut- ted the driver causing a gash to his eyebrow which re- quired stitches. The driver also had his car key and £120 in cash stolen from his vehicle during the ordeal.


BRIGHTON TAXI DRIVER AMONG THOSE TOLD TO SELF-ISOLATE


A Brighton taxi driv- er is believed to be among those who have been told to self-isolate after coming into contact with coronavirus. According to Brigh- ton and Hove News,


the cabbie is among dozens of people contacted after five people from the city were confirmed to have the virus. It’s believed he came into contact with one of four new


cases announced on Monday 10 February. At least five medical centres in the area have since been closed for deep cleaning or other coronavirus related measures.

A taxi driver had a lucky escape after the car they were driving burst into flames. The Hampshire Chronicle reports that emergency ser- vices were called to St Cross Road, Winchester, on a recent Saturday to reports of a vehicle fire. When the fire crew arrived the taxi was said to be well alight. A service spokes- person said that the blaze had started in


the ignition com- partment and was put out using one hose reel. It took firefighters


just 45 minutes to extinguish the fire, before they re- turned to the station.
