IN A CHANGING WORLD
one of the rare leading female voices within our industry today.
Taxi drivers are still predominantly men however, we expect to see this change significantly in the future, as changes make it easier for females to enter the workforce.
Albatross Cars has recently undertaken initiatives to increase awareness amongst females looking for work opportunities. We have a dedicated management team and consciously try to make the work environment as comfortable as possible when it comes to female drivers.
According to FITF, only 3% of the workforce is made up of female workers despite women taking more journeys than men.
By becoming taxi drivers, women have a great degree of flexibility that they wouldn’t get with most other roles, allowing them to work when they like.
One of our long-time female drivers, Habibeh Abasi, recommended that new female drivers take day shifts for safety reasons whilst also encouraging CCTV installation and it’s important to speak with your female taxi drivers on a regular basis to allay any concerns that they may have.
There are many things that taxi firms can do to make the environment more comfortable for women and signing the FITF pledge is a good place to start.
Albatross Cars is delighted to be committed: • To promote the industry to women • To actively recruit women
• To provide a safe working environment for women
• To provide ongoing training in conflict
management, sexual harassment, professional driving standards and ongoing safety
• To provide bespoke benefits • To provide mentoring • To provide access to a support network • To ensure equal pay
• To partner and be endorsed by third parties interested in the welfare of women in the industry
SOLUTION TO THE DRIVER SHORTAGES?
Whilst it certainly won’t solve this issue overnight, increasing female drivers can certainly make a significant difference to most taxi firms.
By creating the right environment for females to join the fleet, you may be pleasantly surprised by the amount of women interested in becoming taxi drivers.
For further information about how to do this, we would recommend joining the Females in the Fleet organisation as well as implementing a dedicated recruitment drive which is specifically targeted at females.
