“TOTALLY UNACCEPTABLE” STOKE PHV DRIVER CAUGHT TEXTING AT WHEEL DURING SCHOOL RUN
A PHV driver faces the sack after a teenage girl spotted him using his mobile phone while driving her to school on 3 November. Emily Cotterill took out her own mobile and began recording as the driver - from ABC Supreme - took her to Created Academy in Hanley.
Burslem-based firm ABC Supreme has said the driver’s apparent actions were ‘totally unacceptable’. It said it had suspended the driver and would be letting him go after being spoken to about it. Emily’s mum Samantha, 34, said: “Emily was scared that they might
crash. They are saying he won’t be driving anymore. He should know the road safety rules and you shouldn’t be on your phone.” A Staffordshire Police spokes- person confirmed it had received a report of dangerous driving in the Chell Heath area of Stoke-on-Trent.
DRUNK NEWCASTLE CABBIE DID A RUNNER FROM POLICE AFTER SMASHING INTO PARKED CARS
A drunk taxi driver did a runner from police and tried to hide after smashing into parked cars. Arkadiusz Buchaniewicz was behind the wheel of a Vauxhall Insignia in the early hours of October 22 when he crashed into parked cars in Fenham, Newcastle. When police arrived on the scene, the drunk 39-year-old made-off and attempted to hide behind other vehicles before “pushing”
and “swinging” at officers. Officers had to pepper-spray Buchaniewicz to arrest him, he was so intoxicated he was taken to hospital due to health concerns. Buchaniewicz, from Newcastle, pleaded guilty to failing to provide a specimen for analysis, and driving without due care and attention. On 7 November, Newcastle Magistrates imposed a 12-month community order, 60 alcohol mon-
itoring days and 15 rehabilitation days. He was banned from driving for 18 months and must pay £85 costs and £115 surcharge. A probation report heard how Buchaniewicz had drank at least seven cans of beer or cider, which had become a “habit”. The report added he “cannot recall or explain why he decided to drive” but is now unemployed after being a taxi driver for six years.
SUSPENDED SENTENCE FOR NEWCASTLE CABBIE WHO SEXUALLY ASSAULTED PASSENGER IN HIS CAB
A taxi driver left a vulnerable female passenger terrified by sexually assaulting her in his car. The woman had become separted from friends during a night out in Newcastle-upon-Tyne city centre when she got in Amer Salamat’s cab and asked to be taken home in the early hours last September. She texted her brother during the trip saying she felt unsafe. When he pulled up near her home, he gave her a piece of paper with his name and number on, having

made it clear he liked her. The married 55-year-old then leaned over and kissed her while touching her thigh.
Salamat denied sexual assault but was found guilty by a jury at Newcastle Crown Court. Salamat, a taxi driver for more than a decade, who has no previous convictions continues to deny the offence. Sentencing him, Judge Tim Gittins told him: “The effect on the victim was drastic and it was drastic on
you as well. Your licence was quickly suspended. “You and others like you in the trade of taxi driving who seek to take advantage of such vulnerable people need to appreciate the seriousness with which the courts take such offending.” Salamat, from Fenham in Newcastle, was sentenced to six months suspended for 18 months with rehabilitation and must sign the sex offenders register for seven years.
