AkzoNobel unveils new updates to Intertrac Vision coatings performance prediction tool AkzoNobel’s International marine coatings brand has announced


a series of updates to Intertrac Vision, its “big data” tool designed to provide accurate and transparent predictions on the fuel and CO2 savings potential of fouling control coatings.


Classification societies join forces to form YSEC: Yacht Safety and Environmental Consortium


Leading global classification societies Lloyd’s Register (LR), RINA, DNV, Bureau Veritas (BV) and ABS, announce the establishment of the Yacht Safety and Environmental Consortium (YSEC) at the Monaco Yacht Show 2024. The new consortium is committed to driving forward the safety and environmental performance of yachts, promoting and advising on achieving the best practices in the industry.


The yacht sector has a considerable need for a unified consortium of class societies, as yachts are not covered by the International Association of Classification Societies (IACS) in the same way other vessels are. The consortium aims to focus on safety and environmentally conscious behavior of commercial and pleasure yachts of over 24 metres in length. The consortium will utilise the collective expertise of its members to support the yachting industry tackling challenges during yacht design and operation by promoting best practices in safety and sustainability, to advising on industry standards and fostering collaboration.


By leveraging the collective expertise and experience of LR, RINA, DNV and BV, the consortium will play a pivotal role in shaping the future of yacht safety and environmental performance through increased collaboration.


MSC Cruises upset the Dutch advertising standards over greenwashing claims Sustainability claims by MSC Cruises, including that it targets "net zero by


2050" do not meet standards, the Dutch advertising board found in one of the first decisions against a cruise operator following a greenwashing complaint. MSC, a privately held Swiss-Italian firm that is among the world's largest cruise operators, said in a reaction it welcomed some parts of the decision and had "already implemented most of the changes advised".


Greenwashing means a company giving a misleading impression of its environmental credentials. The findings of the Stichting Reclame Code (SRC) do not carry any penalty beyond recommending the claims are not repeated. Environmental groups, led by Fossil Free Netherlands that brought the complaint, say slogans and ads used by the firm such as "#SavetheSea", and "sailing to the future in a responsible way" help tourists rationalize using a service that is powered by fossil fuels and contributes to global warming.


Much of the decision focused on MSC's advertising of its use of liquefied natural gas (LNG) in some of its ships. The company says LNG is less carbon dioxide emitting than alternatives such heavy fuel oil or marine diesel. While allowing that may be true, the board said MSC had not considered LNG's broader environmental impact and it was wrong to bill it as "one of the cleanest" fuels.

The latest enhancements include CII rating prediction, EU ETS cost impact and detailed breakdowns of cost savings across multiple drydockings, all designed to further support data-driven decision making. Intertrac Vision analyzes insights from more than 200,000 drydocks and 10,000 vessel operators. Pairing this track record with machine learning modeling, the tool forecasts the contribution of coating performance for a vessel’s in-service period and evaluates the return on investment based on the specified vessel type and operational scenarios. The tool enables vessel operators to make more informed decisions on fouling control coatings which can help contribute to lower fuel consumption and reduced CO2 emissions. The total cost of ownership summary has also been implemented in this recent update, providing insight into the return on investment as well as giving detailed cost contributions for each element of the drydocking cycle.


A recent Lloyd’s List survey found that more than 59% of shipowners consider coatings to be one of the best decarbonization measures they can take to comply with the International Marine Organisation’s Carbon Intensity Indicator and Energy Efficiency Existing Ship Index.
