Enhancing your knowledge about large and superyacht paint coatings projects
5 project
management tips on tackling paint projects.
Coating projects are complex. From paint systems to conflict management, repainting a large or superyacht can be an expensive and a painstaking process. Whether you work in a refit and repair shipyard, as a captain of a yacht or within the marine insurance sector, the pressure to reach a client’s high standards can be intense. Understanding the varying different aspects involved in the process of a large or superyacht paint project can help ensure a satisfied client.
That’s where IIMS can help you navigate the intricacies and challenges you’ll face. We know the importance of paint applications. That’s why we worked with ICOMIA, SYBAss and other stakeholders to launch the Registered Marine Coatings Inspector (RMCI) qualification 10 years ago.
But there’s more to a coating project than just paint – so here are 5 project management tips on handling coating projects:
1 Roles & Responsibilities
Yard management teams, application teams, captains, crew and coatings inspectors. Everybody has a role to play. Understanding the various parties involved in a complex project team and what their responsibilities are is crucial for a successful outcome. Knowing who does what and why - not just how you contribute - can help smooth the whole process.
Jay Lidstone
International Superyacht Coatings (ISC)
“This course gives a great insight into the world of yacht painting. “Being a project manager of a yacht painting company, the information I received gave me a wider perspective and understanding of the roles and responsibilities of the other
parties involved in the projects we take on.
“Very informative, the lecturers
were enthusiastic and engaging. I would definitely recommend this course to anyone involved with superyacht building and refits.”

People & Relationships
Conflicts are commonplace within the yacht painting industry for a number of reasons. Reducing the number of complaints that can come about in a paint project is in everybody’s best interest. Understanding relationships, contractual chain and managing expectations are ways you can prevent disputes. Knowing where and how disagreements happen in the process is key to conflict management.
Manu Ayme Sales Director, GY Group/Pinmar
“I thoroughly enjoyed the course. Rory and Ken made talking about paint as fun as it possibly can be. It was nice to be able to debate on certain points as a
group. The variation of skill sets in the group made it all that more interactive.
“I would recommend this
course to yard management teams in particular.”
