Chinese travellers China’s lowered economic

growth forecast, tax cuts and infrastructure spending and the ongoing trade war with the US presents a challenging domestic picture, but duty free spending appears to be holding up nicely. A future slump in Chinese ‘Daigou’ shuttle trader sales in the luxury segment could still materialise. In the meantime, Chinese travellers rank first among nationalities spending more than $200 in DF&TR, according to average buyer spending data. free trips (73%), with almost all buyers planning their purchases (90%). Travel retailers such as Gebr. Heinemann, Dufry and others are highly cognisant of this decision to purchase prior to the travel journey starting. This is viewed in the likes of Frankfurt, Heathrow and other hubs rolling out click-and-collect and mobile payment technology (Alipay, WeChat Pay, Union Pay) to accommodate ease of purchase. Similar to last year’s findings, self-consumption (48%) tops the purpose of purchase, followed by gifting (35%), sharing (10%) and request (6%). Skincare is the most frequented and purchased category at 52% and 46%, respectively. An average of 3.7 categories are visited, from which 2.9 categories are purchased.
