MOST RELATED INDUSTRIES ADDED JOBS IN RECENT QUARTERS
In 4 out of the 5 related industries, employment levels rose in recent quarters. The restaurants and accommodations sector led the way in job growth with a healthy 16.1% employment gain between the first quarters of 2021 and 2022. Despite the solid in- crease, the hospitality sector was still 1.2 million jobs below its pre-pandemic level. Retailers expanded payrolls at a 3.6% rate between the first quarters of 2021 and
2022. It was during this period that employment in the retail sector surpassed the February 2020 pre-pandemic reading. Employment in the home health care sector also returned to pre-pandemic levels,
with payrolls expanding 2.2% between the first quarters of 2021 and 2022. Hospital employment remained essentially flat in recent quarters, as payrolls edged up 0.1% between the first quarters of 2021 and 2022. Employment in the skilled nursing sector continued to decline, with the number of
jobs falling 4.6% between the first quarters of 2021 and 2022. This marked the con- tinuation of a longer-term trend, as 2021 represented the 10th consecutive calendar year of employment losses in the skilled nursing sector.
