Total U.S. Private Sector
For the first time in two years, the senior living industry registered a quarterly increase in overall staffing levels. According to preliminary figures from the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), the senior living industry added a net 4,300 jobs in the first quarter on a seasonally adjusted basis. That followed seven consecutive quarters of job losses, including declines of more than 10,000 jobs during the third and fourth quarters of last year. Despite the recent increase, employment in the senior living industry declined 3.1%
between the first quarters of 2021 and 2022. In comparison, overall private sector employment rose 5.3% during the same four-quarter period. Within the senior living industry, job losses were much more significant at continu-
ing care retirement communities in recent quarters. Employment at continuing care retirement communities fell 5.4% between the first quarters of 2021 and 2022, while payrolls at assisted living communities only declined by 0.7%.
