A CERTAIN SENSE OF PLACE
2019 Senior Living by Design Award Winners Create Shared Community and Culture Through Every Detail BY JANE ADLER
G
ood building design creates a sense of place. The design takes its cues from the cultural cues and environment around it, resulting in a community that fits in with its surroundings, but also feels like a destination.
This sense of place provides an emotional footing, too.
It grounds residents, so they feel part of their community connecting them to local history and to their own history. This year’s Senior Living by Design award winners provide a sense of place. Each design respects the past, but also looks forward to the future. Arbor Terrace Fulton, part of a larger planned neigh- borhood in Maryland, reflects the energy of the new neighborhood with contemporary flair. Pathways con- nect the community to stores and restaurants and sev- eral schools are right next door. To weave a new building into the fabric of an estab-
lished community requires attention to detail. Designers adopted the Mediterranean style of the rest of the cam- pus for a new assisted living and memory care building at The Colonnade in Surprise, Ariz. The result is fresh, yet with a sense of continuity.
Next door to a working farm in Connecticut, Bright-
view Shelton updates subtle farmhouse details for a seamless blend of old and new. Light-filled rooms and exposed beams evoke a simpler time. Views of rolling fields, grazing cows, and traditional red barns help make the community complete. Belmont Village Lincoln Park replicates a well- known building in a dense Chicago neighborhood. The community wanted to keep its landmark, and the de- signers listened and made it happen—down to the last brick. The interiors burst with Chicago pride. Another case of working with the neighborhood to preserve a cultural treasure can be found at Sunrise at Silas Burke House, a new assisted living and memory care residence in Burke, Va. Designers shined up a jewel of a historic home on the property as they incor- porated classic American details in the new building. The five winners and the 29 Senior Living by Design nominees showcase forward-facing design trends, use of materials, and concepts that have promise for the long term. Together, they make up a collection of in- spiring and engaging communities ready to welcome residents home.
