THE COLONNADE Surprise, Ariz.

An addition to an existing campus should never look like an addition: That designers’ maxim guided the thinking for the new as- sisted living and memory care building at The Colonnade, a life plan community. The community culture is that of a warm
sense of belonging, so an additional build- ing needed to “belong” as well. The small, single-story also had to fit in with the wider campus and its Mediterranean style. The result is a cohesive community envi-
ronment, says LuAnn Thoma-Holec, prin- cipal and founder of interior design firm Thoma-Holec, Mesa, Ariz. The firm had designed the interiors for The Colonnade’s clubhouse, Club Sole, which won a Senior Living by Design Award in 2017.
20 SENIOR LIVING EXECUTIVE NOVEMBER/DECEMBER 2019
The new building, with 26 assisted liv- ing apartments and 24 memory care suites, opened in August. As well as blending with the existing communities, its design features open yet well-defined spaces with natural tran- sitions. Amenities are thoughtfully positioned throughout the assisted living section to make socializing natural; a music room, for instance, sits deep inside the building at the intersection of two hallways near the apartments. A strong indoor-outdoor orientation pro-
vides an abundance of natural light. The as- sisted living and memory care sections each have a dedicated courtyard. Senior Living by Design judge Bruce
Hurowitz, of Merlino Design Partnership, commented that the community was “well thought-out.” Judge John Cronin, AIA, AG
