2019 SENIOR LIVING BY DESIGN NOMINEES

1. Adelaide of Newton Centre, Newton, Mass., Bench- mark. An adaptive reuse project, the community is lo- cated in an historical structure on the former campus of Andover Newton Theological Seminary. The goal was to preserve the building and its rich history. The existing structure was renovated to house the main operations. A 35,000-square-foot addition was created in a circular pattern surrounding an exterior courtyard.

2. Atria at River Trail, Bolingbrook, Ill., Harley Ellis Devereaux. Design objectives for this assisted living and memory care community were to create connections to nature in a com- fortable and familiar setting. A “four seasons” room with tall, wide windows overlooks the accessible roof terrace.

3. Atria at Villages of Windsor, Lake Worth, Fla, Gensler. Setting a new standard in senior living, the project takes its cues from the hospitality industry on what it means to live well, relax, restore, and come together as a com- munity. The Spanish mission-style complex includes tiled arches and hand-crafted details.

4. Brightview West End, Rockville, Md., Hord Coplan Macht. Blending the community into the urban environment of Rockville allows residents to benefit from the amenities of the surrounding Town Square development. The ground floor is open to the public at large, while the penthouse provides exclusive club-style services.

5. Brookdale Meridian Boulder, Boulder, Colo., Brookdale Senior Living. The renovation of this property included the use of a bright and vibrant color palette. The design provides visual stimulation with added rustic elements for a progressive look.

6. Carlton Senior Living San Leandro, San Leandro, Calif., Carlton Senior Living. A section called “Suite 100” was created in this assisted living community for residents who may be over stimulated in a large group setting. “Suite 100” offers a quiet environment for four residents, each with their own bedroom, private kitchen, and living room. The homelike environment is comfortable but elegant, combining the best of assisted living and memory care.

7. Christian Home & Rehabilitation Center, Waupun, Wis., 4 Design. Situated in an underserved rural area, the proj- ect offers nearly 86,500 square feet of space for assisted living and skilled nursing care. Inspired by the nearby Horicon Marsh, a wildlife refuge, the design incorporated natural elements and Prairie Style, but with a modern twist.

8. Edgemere, Dallas, Texas, PushPoint Marketing. An exten- sive remodel and addition project included a lobby reno- vation, an updated amenity offering, and an expansion of the skilled nursing, memory care, and assisted living com- ponents. A series of well-appointed Mediterranean Revival structures sit within a beautifully landscaped property and blend into the surrounding neighborhood.

9. Grandview Terrace, Sun City West, Ariz., Thoma-Holec Design. A six-story, 20+-year-old community was trans- formed from traditional to contemporary design. This community’s long-standing positive reputation is now enhanced by its modern feel, elevating its position in a competitive market.

10. Juniper Village at Bucks County, Bensalem, Pa., Design- Point. The primary focus of this renovation project was the main campus building, the Village Gateway. A new porte cochère provides visual appeal as well as a safe and comfortable place for resident pick up and drop off. The garden level includes the Center for Healthy Living, with therapy and clinical wellness suites, a beauty salon, fitness studios, and indoor pool.

11. LivGenerations Pinnacle Peak, Scottsdale, Ariz., Thoma- Holec Design. An upscale community with exceptional amenities, including a range of dining venues. The goal is to create a “lifestyle of possibilities.” Beautiful surround- ings serve as the basis of the experiential focus on ser- vice, meals, and activities.

12. Magnolia Crossing, Clovis, Calif., Paul Halajian Architects. This project is meant to house very-low to low-income seniors who could not otherwise afford assisted living. The design includes three 10,000-square-foot Craftsman- style homes with 16 private units and common areas. The small-home configuration allows for proactive care and an active social environment.
